Police ID bodies found at Oceanfront hotel

12-25-2013 Virginia:

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Police have identified two homicide victims found at an Oceanfront hotel last week.

According to James Cason with the Virginia Beach Police Department, the bodies were discovered in a fifth-floor room Thursday by a housekeeping employee at the Comfort Inn in the 2300 block of Atlantic Avenue.

Monday, police identified the victims as 31-year-old Lenny McDannell, of New Castle, Delaware, and 32-year-old Joshua Zettles of Virginia Beach.

Before Zettles went down to the Oceanfront hotel, he spoke with his sister Jackie, who did not want her last name revealed.

"The last time I saw him was earlier [Thursday] afternoon," said Jackie. "We were making plans to get together the following day as a family."

Jackie said Zettles was going to the Oceanfront to see his friend, McDannell, who is a registered sex offender in Delaware.

Sex Offender Shot Dead by Police After 37-Hour Hostage Standoff — 2 Bodies Found in N.J. Home

5-12-2013 New Jersey:

TRENTON, N.J. (TheBlaze/AP) — Police stormed a New Jersey home early Sunday and fatally shot a registered sex offender who had held his girlfriend’s three children hostage, ending a 37-hour ordeal and recovering the bodies of the girlfriend and one of her children, authorities said.

As TheBlaze reported yesterday, officers initially went to the South Trenton home Friday afternoon and found a man was barricaded inside. A relative Carmelita Stevens, 44, said she hadn’t spoken to her in weeks and was worried, authorities said at a news conference Sunday. Upon further investigation, authorities then discovered her children hadn’t been to school in 12 days.

Police entered the home through a rear door and smelled an odor consistent with that of a decomposing body, Trenton Police Director Ralph Rivera Jr. said. The officers also noticed maggots throughout the residence.

They found 38-year-old Gerald “Skip” Tyrone Murphy in an upstairs bedroom and he told them he was armed with a gun and explosives and had three children with him, Mercer County Prosecutor Joseph L. Bocchini Jr. said. Officers noticed one of the dead victims before they retreated from the second floor and rescued Stevens’ 19-year-old son from the basement, who said he hadn’t seen her or his siblings since about April 24.

Homes on the surrounding block were evacuated as a precaution, and police tape cordoned off the street in front of the house. A SWAT team was called, and an arson bomb unit was also on the scene. Police said Murphy could be seen from a window holding a black handgun.

Police remained in contact with Murphy throughout the standoff and passed food into the home through an upstairs window, state police Col. Rick Fuentes said. Murphy kept the captives with him inside the roughly 10-foot-by-11-foot bedroom throughout the standoff, authorities said.

As the standoff stretched into a third day, officers entered the home around 3:45 a.m. Sunday after noting Murphy’s “deteriorating state of mind” and deciding it was necessary to enter to help ensure the captives survived, Fuentes said. An officer shot Murphy because he was threatening one of the children, he said.

Murphy was taken to a hospital and later died of his injuries. No law enforcement personnel were injured during the standoff or the confrontation with Murphy.

“This was a very complex matter, considering the space (where the hostages were) and that three children were involved,” Fuentes said. “Our mission over those 37 hours was to save innocent lives.”

Authorities found the bodies of Stevens and her 13-year-old son in separate bedrooms. Stevens’ body was in an advanced state of decomposition, and police said she and her son may have been killed two weeks ago. Police didn’t say which of the bodies they had seen inside the home Friday afternoon.

Three of Stevens’ children – an 18-year-old woman, a 16-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy – were rescued and taken to a medical center for evaluation and treatment. Murphy had abused and assaulted the captives, Bocchini said.

Murphy and Stevens had been dating for a few months, and both lived in the house, police said. He was not the father of any of her children.

Authorities wouldn’t comment on a possible motive or say how the victims died, citing the ongoing investigation. They also would not say whether any bombs or other explosives were recovered at the residence.

Attempts to contact the victims’ relatives and neighbors were unsuccessful on Sunday.

Murphy had a long criminal history including convictions for aggravated assault and criminal conspiracy, Bocchini said. He had previously been arrested for robbery and weapons offenses and child endangerment. He also had an arrest warrant in Pennsylvania for failing to register as a sex offender. ..Source.. by Dave Urbanski

Remains Of Ohio Teen Missing For 13 Years Found In Rapist’s Home

2002 Ohio:

Police are saying that the skeleton of a fourteen-year-old Ohio runaway that has been missing since 1999 has been discovered after the home where she was last seen was demolished.

The Lima News reported that Lima police on Saturday stated that the remains of Nicholle Coppler were discovered in a crawl space while the home’s foundation was being dug out. Allen County Coroner Gary Beasley stated that they were identified from her dental records.

Glen Fryer, who owned the home, was a suspect in Coppler’s death. The newspaper reported that he was 55 when he committed suicide in 2002 while waiting for his sentencing for raping a girl.

The state took possession and demolished the home because of unpaid taxes. Coppler’s remains were the only ones discovered.

Krista Coppler, the girl’s mother, who now lives Florida, said she knew in her heart it was Nicholle. She said she knew in her heart she never left that house.

Lima Police Chief Kevin Martin stated that the discovery means the homicide investigation is opened back up. The newspaper reported that police have stated that Fryer was linked to human trafficking. ..Source.. by CRWE News Wire

'I knew in my heart she never left that house': Remains of runaway girl, 14, found in rapist's basement during demolition 13 YEARS after she disappeared

2-20-2012 Ohio:

The skeletal remains of a 14-year-old runaway, who went missing in 1999, have been found after the home where she was last seen was demolished, according to police.

The remains of Nicholle Coppler were found in a crawl space as the home's foundations were being dug out on Saturday.

The girl, from Ohio, was identified by dental records, according to Allen County Coroner Gary Beasley.

The home in Lima was owned by Glen Fryer, who had been a suspect in Miss Coppler's disappearance.

Fryer killed himself in 2002 when he was 55, while in prison for the rape of a 12-year-old girl.

The home was demolished after the state took possession due to unpaid taxes. Miss Coppler's remains were the only ones found.

The girl's mother Krista Coppler, who now lives in Florida, said: 'I knew in my heart it was Nicholle.

'I knew in my heart she never left that house.'

Lima Police Chief Kevin Martin said the discovery meant the homicide investigation has been reopened.

Police said Fryer had also been linked to human trafficking.

Chief Martin said: 'Our goal is still the same: Try to get to the truth. Where exactly that will lead us I cannot say.'

Lieutenant Jim Baker said detectives believed Fryer was involved in the girl's death but that there were other suspects also considered.

Police said others knew that the girl was in the house, as at least two other people lived in the home with Fryer.

Mrs Coppler said she didn't believe the investigation into her daughter's disappearance had been handled properly in 1999 but that police have since changed policy on runaway teenagers.

She said: 'If, in Nicholle's name, she can save some other girls, some good can come out of this.'

Miss Coppler was last seen on May 15, 1999 and was known to be in the company of Fryer in June.

Fryer was arrested on August 30, 2001, and charged with multiple counts of rape and child pornography involving local girls.

When police searched his house, they found Miss Coppler's ID, photos of her and a hair accessory containing her hair.

Fryer pleaded no contest to four counts of rape of a minor on February 14, 2002.

He had agreed to talk about Miss Coppler as part of a plea bargain but hanged himself in his jail cell five days later.

In 2006, the Coppler family's hopes of finding the missing girl were dashed after the police searched land next to Fryer's house with cadaver dogs but found only animal bones, according to the Toledo Blade newspaper.

Authorities initially classified Miss Coppler's disappearance as a runaway.

Prior to going missing the ninth-grader had been missing classes at Lima High School and her grades had slipped. Her mother said she had made a new group of friends which changed her behaviour.

It is believed she may have been forced into prostitution by Fryer and was killed when she refused to comply.

According to the Charley Project, which investigates cold cases, Miss Coppler's diary was also found at the home, which Fryer shared with his mother.

In the last entries, the teenager reportedly said she was sorry for running away and wanted to go back to her family - but that the people she was with wouldn't let her leave.

Before being convicted of rape, Fryer, a Vietnam veteran, was believed to have been involved in the murder of his ex-wife Connie Ferenczi.

Ferenczi was shot dead at her Ohio home in 1980. Another man was charged with her murder but during his trial it was implied that Fryer hired him to murder his estranged wife.

The man was acquitted by a jury and Fryer was never arrested as there was a lack of evidence. Fryer consistently maintained his innocence in Ferenczi's murder. ..Source.. by Louise Boyle

Fort Worth police: Sex offender killed homeless man to fake own death

Posted in Related Deaths
4-7-2011 Texas:

Police say a Fort Worth man attempted to fake his own death by murdering a homeless man, throwing his body into the trunk of his car and then setting the vehicle on fire.

It's the latest chapter in the life of career criminal Michael A. Gilbert, police said.

Investigators said they have linked 44-year-old Gilbert to the burned body found in the trunk of a car in the early morning hours on March 30.

Fort Worth police said this is the first case they have investigated in which someone faked their own death. But, they said it is apparently not the first time Gilbert tried to convince people he was dead.

The Department of Corrections said Gilbert has been in and out of prison since 1987. Convicted of raping a 12-year-old girl, he went back to prison four times for parole violations.

One man said Gilbert is now accused of raping his 16-year-old sister in March.

"I never liked him, and he told my sister that he wanted to kill her boyfriend," the brother said.

Fort Worth police say days after the alleged rape, they found Gilbert's burning car in Eugene McCray Park near Lake Arlington. Firefighters found a body in the trunk, but the victim didn't match Gilbert's dental records.

"We believe at this time it is possibly a homeless person from the Fort Worth area," said Sgt. Cheryl Johnson. "We are trying for sure to confirm the identity."

Police said Gilbert also tried to fake his death in Mississippi in 2002 when he violated parole. In that case, he told police he was a cousin who watched Gilbert drown in the Gulf. Biloxi police soon learned his real identity and sent him back to Texas to serve another 10 months in prison.

This week, detectives investigating the most recent alleged rape tracked down Gilbert to the West Chase Apartments. After a seven-hour standoff, SWAT officers launched tear gas canisters into an upstairs unit and found him hiding in the attic.

The brother of the most recent alleged rape victim said his sister is still recovering from the incident.

"I wouldn't put it past him," he said of whether he believes Gilbert attempted to fake his own death through murder. "He's a smart man, so yea."

Police said Gilbert tried to cut his own neck when the SWAT team showed up. At last check, he was in the hospital recovering before he is taken to jail. ..Source.. by WFAA

911 CALL: 'I'm gonna kill myself'

10-1-2004 Nevada:

Caller told dispatcher police would find girlfriend's body in Treasure Island room

Lawrence Joyce told a 911 dispatcher his girlfriend's death was an accident but he was going to kill himself anyway.

In his call to Las Vegas police early Tuesday, the 34-year-old tourist did not explain why he killed Rebecca Roux, his girlfriend of four months, but he apologized as he calmly told a dispatcher that police could find her body in a Treasure Island hotel room, according to a 911 recording released Thursday.

"There is a body on the floor there," Joyce said. "Please take care of her. OK? Please get her back to her family. OK? And like I said, I'm sorry. It was a (expletive) accident, and it just spiraled out of control."

The Laconia, N.H., resident gave no details of the slaying, but detailed his violent criminal history and recounted a bizarre incident at a Treasure Island bar on the day of the killing.

"Last night, something happened to me at the bar," he told the dispatcher. "I had four drinks. I started hallucinating. OK? Security came up. I thought they were FBI. I was cowering in the corner. This is when it happened. This happened this afternoon between me and her. So I don't know if there was something in my drink, but you can just talk to security and say, `Did this happen last night?' and you'll know you have the right guy."

Several hours after the 911 call, he jumped from the Hoover Dam, plunging more than 700 feet to his death.

When he called 911 about 12:15 a.m., Joyce spelled his name and got to the point.

"I'm only gonna stay on the phone for a minute with you," he said. "I'm gonna give you guys directions to a couple of bodies, and then I'm gonna kill myself right now on the phone."

For the next three minutes and 45 seconds, Joyce urged the dispatcher to send officers to the room and resisted attempts by the dispatcher to talk him out of suicide.

"Listen, I've got to go," Joyce said. "I thank you, and trust me, there's definitely nothing you can do. God bless you and I am sorry."

"Lawrence, will you stay on the phone with me, at least a little bit longer?" the dispatcher said.

"I won't. I have to go right now. I thank you," Joyce responded.

Earlier, as he tried to convince the dispatcher that he was telling the truth, Joyce revealed his criminal past.

"You run my record, OK, you'll know I'm for real," Joyce said. "I spent four years in New Hampshire state prison for rape and kidnapping, assault and weapons charges."

He actually served just under two years on a 1990 conviction for aggravated felonious sexual assault
and criminal mischief, according to a New Hampshire Department of Corrections spokesman.

In that case, Joyce kidnapped and sexually assaulted a former girlfriend, according to the Portland (Maine) Press Herald.

The four-month relationship between Joyce and Roux was rocky, and Roux had called a co-worker Monday afternoon to say they had broken up during their trip to Las Vegas, the paper reported.

During the call, Roux told the co-worker she would soon return home. About the same time, Joyce called Roux's former boss and her father to tell them she was coming home, the paper said.

But she never returned to Sanford, Maine.

Police found her body in the couple's room on the 29th floor of Treasure Island. The official cause of death was blunt trauma to the head, the coroner's office said.

Authorities later found Joyce on the dam and tried to talk him out of jumping. About 4 a.m. he jumped, leaving many unanswered questions for those he left behind.

"It's a tragedy for both families," said Joyce's father, Lawrence Joyce Sr. ..more.. by BRIAN HAYNES

TN- Police say man killed self, two daughters

Local man shoots, kills himself as officer discovers rape charge

The bodies of two young girls and their father, a Clarksville man wanted on rape charges, were found in a car in Oak Ridge Thursday following what police are calling a murder-suicide.

Richard Alfonso Howard, 32, was approached Thursday morning in his car by a TVA police officer patrolling a parking lot at the Bull Run Fossil plant, about 15 miles west of Knoxville in East Tennessee, said Jim Carver, director of TVA police.

The officer asked Howard why he was there, and Howard said he had run out of gas and was waiting for someone, Carver said.

The officer initially did not notice the girls, who were covered in the back of the vehicle, Carver said. After the officer ran a check on Howard's plate numbers, he discovered the outstanding rape warrants.

When he returned to Howard's Ford Crown Victoria he found him slumped over the steering wheel, dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot.

Police searched the car and found the bodies of Howard's daughters — Brionna, 3, and Markayla, 2 — with a suicide note in which he admitted to killing them, police said.

Investigators declined to say when or how the toddlers died. Howard had two outstanding rape warrants involving a 15-year-old girl at a local motel last summer.

The teen told Clarksville police in August Howard took her to the Holiday Drive motel on July 4 and forced her to have sex with him against her will, according to a report by CPD Detective Shane Dortch. ..more.. by HEATHER DONAHOE

Hawaiian confesses to killing Pitt professor in 1996

5-22-2010 Hawaii:

A Hawaiian man has confessed to the 1996 suffocation death of a University of Pittsburgh linguistics professor from Beaver County, prosecutors in the island state said.

Jason Lee McCormick, 36, was arrested Thursday on a charge of second-degree murder for the Waikiki slaying of Robert T. Henderson, 51, of Chippewa.

Jim Fulton, executive assistant to Honolulu's prosecuting attorney, said McCormick confessed in a statement to Honolulu police. Deputy Honolulu Prosecutor Victoria Kapp said McCormick made the statement years after the murder, but she did not give details.

McCormick remained jailed Friday on $500,000 bond, awaiting arraignment. Fulton said that in Hawaii, the maximum penalty for a second-degree murder is life in prison with the possibility of parole.

Henderson was a guest lecturer at the University of Hawaii when his naked and decomposing body was found in a condominium he was staying in.

According to a grand jury indictment of McCormick, police believe Henderson was killed sometime between July 12 and 17, 1996. He was last seen leaving a hula lesson on the university campus July 12 and was found dead five days later.

At the time of the slaying, police said someone wrote a message on Henderson's buttocks suggesting he was a child molester. A pen was jammed into a leg. Police said later they did not find evidence to substantiate the molestation claim.

Michael Henderson, one of Henderson's two brothers, said in 1996 that he believed the message was a smokescreen — and that the true motive for the killing was robbery. He said two watches and a money clip that the family believed Robert Henderson took to Hawaii disappeared.

Fulton said the homicide suspect has a prior misdemeanor-theft conviction.

Fulton said Michael Henderson, of Annapolis, Md., testified Thursday in front of the grand jury that indicted McCormick. Fulton would not say what Henderson said.

Henderson issued a written statement on behalf of his brother's family, saying they were "relieved" when they heard about McCormick's arrest.

The statement said Robert Henderson "achieved so much during his short 51 years and would have contributed so much more if his life hadn't ended so senselessly."

Killer Targeted Sex Offenders

This is by far the most confusing case to follow. It is in the Suicide File (because he committed suicide while in prison), -AND- the Murders File (because he murdered a former offender while in prison), -AND- the Other Deaths File (because he killed his father alleging he molested him while a youngster).

Lunz's father was accused of molesting Lunz when he was a child, Lunz's father was not a convicted sex offender. Lunz mentioned this at his trial, and said, that is why he killed him (the reason for being in other deaths blog). The deaths of FSOs will be recorded in a report of FSOs.

Be sure to see the video in the first story. To summerize this story: Lunz however, before he was imprisoned, claims he targeted other child molesters. One is Gerald Estes -from Georgia- who is missing to this date. Authorities have no proof of that claim but Lunz's word. Now, after being convicted of killing his father, while in prison he also killed his cellmate (Nathaniel Taylor) who was a convicted child molester.
12-9-2009 Florida:

Before he killed himself a convicted murderer claimed he targeted child molesters here in the mountains. Christopher Lunz served time in prison for killing his own father.

Now Macon County investigators believe he killed Gerald Estes. Estes was accused of molesting young boys.

Chrisopher Lunz sent a letter to a Macon County detective going into graphic detail of how he and another man tortuted and killed Estes then burned his remains.

Lunz claims he targeted child molesters.

During his trial for murdering his father he said he'd been molested as a child.

This may explain why he targeted suspected pedophiles like Estes.

After getting the letter, admitting he killed Estes, the Macon County Sheriff's Office tried to reach Lunz at a Florida prison.

But he'd already killed himself after killing another prisoner who was also a convicted child molester. They believe there may be more victims out there. ..Source.. by News ABC13

IN LETTER, CONVICTED MURDERED SAYS HE KILLED A MACON COUNTY MAN

FRANKLIN-New details have surfaced in the case involving a convicted murderer who killed himself.

Christopher Lunz, a North Carolina resident made headlines a few years ago after being convicted for the murder of his own father, who he claimed sexually abused him during his childhood and was serving life in prison in a north Florida facility.

However, the case took another turn in September when the 41 year old Lunz allegedly took his own life while in prison. He had also allegedly killed a cell mate of his who was charged with child sex crimes.

But now the case becomes more startling as local authorities say they received a letter from Lunz in which he claims he killed a Macon County man awaiting trial on child sex crimes.

We spoke with Macon County Sheriff Robbie Holland who has more details on this bizarre case, “When we received the letter we met with the District Attorney’s Office the same day and then we attempted to make contact with Lunz the following day. The problem was between the time he wrote the letter and it was delivered to us he had been involved in another homicide within the prison system and had also committed suicide.”

The letter stated that Lunz had picked up Gerald Estes from the Franklin motel then proceeded to torture and kill him.

Holland says Lunz actually confessed to the killing of Estes to the Sheriff’s Office before writing the letter, but after an investigation no hard evidence was uncovered, “We conducted searches and the SBI was involved as well.

We looked in various locations where he claimed to have burned and discarded the body. The problem was we were unable to find any kind of evidence related to Gerald Estes.”

Authorities say they did discover what was concluded to be human hair during the investigation, but it still wasn’t enough to prove Estes is dead.

Sheriff Holland goes on to say the letter states Lunz wanted to come back to North Carolina and lead investigators to the body if they would ensure he got the death penalty.

Holland said that wasn’t possible.

He adds another individual was involved in the alleged killing of Estes and that person did pass a polygraph test.

As for whether or not Estes was actually killed that is unknown but no one has reportedly seen him since he left the motel, “Mr. Estes did not check out of the hotel, but he did leave his belongings behind. Now we know that the reason he left them behind is because he was with Christopher Lunz,” Holland said.

Holland is hopeful that the investigation being conducted by the state of Florida will reveal more evidence on Gerald Estes. He says he will stay in the system until more evidence is produced, but they are not actively searching for a body. ..Source.. by WFSC Radio News/Keith Giles, November 23, 2009

Pinellas murderer commits suicide after fatally stabbing cellmate

9-22-2009 Florida:

NEW PORT RICHEY - If taken at his word, Christopher Lunz wanted to die.

After being convicted of first-degree murder in the slaying of his father, Lunz begged a Pinellas County jury to sentence him to death in 2006. Instead, jurors recommended life in prison.

But Lunz, 41, made good on his death wish today, killing himself inside Florida State Prison in Raiford. His suicide came roughly 30 hours after he stabbed his cellmate to death and injured a second inmate while at Franklin Correctional Institution in Carrabelle, authorities say.

Lunz had been housed at Franklin since August 2006. He was only taken to the more secure Raiford facility after prison officials found convicted child molester Nathaniel Taylor dead Monday morning in the cell he shared with Lunz.

Taylor, 46, was serving time for violating parole on convictions out of Volusia County. He was scheduled to be released in 2016.

Prison officers opened cell doors at 4:55 a.m. Monday and immediately heard Lunz say he had a hostage and warn officers to stay back, said Department of Corrections spokeswoman Gretl Plessinger. An officer talked Lunz into surrendering a shank and noticed Taylor's body.

Officials did not identify the injured inmate but said his injuries were not life-threatening.

Plessinger said she didn't know how Lunz made the shank or the manner of his suicide.

"The details are all pretty sketchy until the investigation gets a little further along," she said.

Lunz and co-defendant William Westerman were charged with first-degree murder in 2005. Authorities said the men drove from their home in North Carolina to Palm Harbor in March 2003 to kill 56-year-old David Lunz. Investigators said Christopher Lunz wanted his father dead so he could inherit his estate, which was valued at nearly $400,000.

The case made headlines when it went to trial in June 2006, partly because Lunz acted as his own attorney for most of the proceedings. Westerman made a deal with prosecutors and testified against his former mentor and roommate, admitting that he shot David Lunz but saying he did so on Christopher Lunz's orders.

Westerman, 29, is serving a 30-year sentence.

Lunz brimmed with confidence during his trial, even planning a press conference to announce what he thought would be a not guilty verdict. It wasn't to be. His dream of vindication shattered, Lunz pleaded for a death sentence during the trial's penalty phase.

"I don't mind," he testified. "I'm not too happy. I'm 38 years old, and I've never been in love, never been on a date."

He also testified that his father was killed for raping him as a child and beating his mother. Lunz called himself a serial killer and said he had killed more than 20 other men who had raped children.

The jury still refused to recommend death.

"I should have known better," Lunz said after he received the life sentence. "I should have known if you ask for death, they give you life." ..Source.. by TODD LESKANIC | The Tampa Tribune

Christopher Lunz Found Guilty In Dad's Killing

6-9-2006 Florida:

CLEARWATER - A man who orchestrated his father's slaying was convicted of first-degree murder Thursday, quashing his plans for a victory celebration.

Instead, jurors return to court today to hear evidence before recommending whether Christopher Lunz should be executed for the March 2003 murder of David Lunz in his Palm Harbor home.

Lunz, 38, represented himself and was so sure he convinced jurors of his innocence that he was planning a news conference to discuss his victory, said two defense attorneys appointed to assist him.

They acknowledged - as did many watching the case - that Lunz did a remarkable job representing himself, despite having demanded that his trial be staged quickly before the defense team had a chance to examine all the evidence and interview all the witnesses.

"From an attorney's standpoint, I don't think the case was fully developed. We never followed up on his [possible] alibi," defense lawyer Keith Hammond said. "As for all the evidence on the table, he did as well as any attorney could do. But I don't think we had all the evidence and the state had three years to prepare."

Lunz and the man who pulled the trigger were charged with his father's murder late last year after a gun stolen from David Lunz's home was found on the bank of a lake near where the killers lived in North Carolina.

William Westerman, 26, quickly confessed to the crime and said Lunz ordered him to shoot his father with a sawed-off shotgun after the son attacked his father during what Westerman thought was supposed to be a friendly visit, authorities said. He testified against his former roommate and mentor and will receive a 30-year prison term in exchange for his cooperation.

Assistant State Attorney Mark McGarry told jurors Lunz hoped to inherit an estate worth nearly $400,000 from his father, whom he had not seen or visited for decades. It turned out the elder Lunz did not include his son in his will.

In opening statements earlier this week, Lunz told jurors Westerman acted alone and that prosecutors had no evidence he ever visited Florida in March 2003. The lack of evidence tying him to the murder scene turned out to be true, but Lunz apologized to the jury during his closing arguments Thursday for failing to present any alibi witnesses.

Late Wednesday, Hammond told Circuit Judge Dee Anna Farnell the defense team was awaiting word from a North Carolina couple who might have testified Lunz was visiting their home the day his father was killed. But Lunz chose to rest his case without calling any witnesses, even though Farnell offered to give him time to contact the couple.

Instead, Lunz chose to focus on the lack of physical evidence tying him to the murder scene.

His father died after a violent struggle, and there was blood all though his house, Lunz told the jury in his closing argument.

Westerman testified Lunz attacked his father and struggled with him, yet there was no DNA, not a single hair or fingerprint left behind, he said.

"There was not one single piece of evidence to put me there, but there was of William Westerman," he said.

When Lunz returns to court today, it will be under extraordinary security. Nine bailiffs surrounded him as the verdict was read Thursday, and Lunz has been wearing a harness that can deliver an electrical shock, if needed, by a bailiff.

At a hearing last week, security officials told the judge they had evidence Lunz may have been planning an escape, said Dyril Flanagan, a second defense attorney assisting during the trial. Also, the judge was told Lunz is under investigation for five other murders, although no details were provided, Flanagan said. ..Source.. by DAVID SOMMER

Murderer, now dead, said he ‘did in’ accused molester

11-25-2009 Georgia:

Estes awaiting trial when Lunz nabbed, killed him, Lunz wrote

Macon County Sheriff Robbie Holland confirmed details surrounding some bizarre twists in the case of a convicted murderer who apparently killed himself a few weeks ago after allegedly committing additional murders in a Florida prison.

Christopher Lunz was living here when sheriff’s deputies arrested him in the murder of his father in Florida in 2003. He had claimed his father had sexually abused him when he was a child. Lunz was extradited to Florida and was convicted in 2006 and was serving a life term there when he allegedly killed one inmate, stabbed another and left him for dead, then killed himself the next day, Holland said. At least one of his latest alleged victims was a convicted sex molester.

Before the recent slayings and his own death, Lunz sent local authorities a letter in which he claimed also to have killed Gerald Estes, who was awaiting trial here on charges of sex crimes against a minor. Holland said he believed the Estes proceedings dated to 2006.

“He’s still listed as missing, we’re still trying to locate him,” Holland said, though, “We don’t have an investigator working on it full-time.

“There’s still an outstanding warrant for [Estes’] arrest and failure to appear,” Holland said. “Until we find definite evidence [of his demise], he’ll remain that way.”

Authorities have searched sites Lunz pointed them to in looking for Estes’ remains, but no evidence was found of his death.

Holland confirmed that an accomplice in the murder of Lunz’s father, who is also serving a life term in Florida, took and passed a polygraph test in which he claimed he assisted Lunz in Estes’ murder, which supposedly took place after they picked Estes up from the Franklin hotel where he’d been staying.

Reports said Lunz wrote his recent letter restating his claim to have killed Estes and offering to help locate the body in order to make a deal to be executed, but Holland said that wouldn’t have been possible.

Estes’ belongings were left behind at the hotel where he was last seen and were never claimed by him, the sheriff said. ..Source.. by David Tell , Staff Writer

A very odd case. Police say it was not a murder-suicide but, a FSO and his wife were murdered, and it may be related to another case where he worked. At very least, it is in this blog to report the death of the FSO's wife.
7-28-2007 Florida:
A man and woman were found dead Friday in a mobile home outside Palatka in what authorities say appears to be a double homicide.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office identified the victims as 36-year-old Terrance Eugene McCloud and 30-year-old Carley Ann Collum. Investigators don’t yet know when they died or how they were killed.

Friday night, investigators believed it was not a murder-suicide, said Maj. Gary Bowling, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office.

Worried co-workers of Collum, who was employed at the PRC call center in Palatka, led to the grisly discovery shortly after noon.

During their lunch break, the co-workers went to Collum’s home in the Silver Lake Oaks Mobile Home Park and became concerned when they saw her car parked outside and got no response at the door.

The park’s manager then opened the mobile home and discovered McCloud’s body inside.

Collum also missed work on Thursday. That prompted a welfare check call to deputies, who went to the home and saw nothing unusual from the outside, Bowling said.

Investigators confirmed Collum was alive late Wednesday and early Thursday.

The mobile home is in Lot 43, next to a vacant lot where four cars were parked.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigators spent Friday afternoon taking photographs and collecting evidence. Yellow crime scene tape kept neighbors from getting close.

Family members of both McCloud and Collum were called by police to the area, but knew little more than investigators.

“I don’t know anything,” said Carmelia Mauesby, McCloud’s aunt. “It’s a total shock. There were no problems. He was always a happy person. He didn’t bother nobody at all.”

Mauesby was called by her daughter, who lives across the street from McCloud.

The last time she said she had spoken with him was last week, she said.

“Whatever happened, they need to get to the bottom of it, because he doesn’t bother anybody,” Mauesby said. “It’s just not good for the family at all.”

Mauesby said that McCloud’s grandmother, the woman who raised him, was seriously ill and may not live long. His grandmother last spoke with him on Wednesday, she said.

Family members said McCloud worked at Matthews Moving and Storage, where he had been employed for more than 10 years. He had lived at the Silver Lake Drive residence a couple of months, they said.

Collum is the second PRC employee slain this month.

On July 6, Stephen Richardson was found stabbed to death in his Palatka apartment. No arrests have been in his death and a $2,000 reward is being offered for information.

As of Friday night, authorities had no link between the two slayings, Bowling said.

The state Department of Corrections shows McCloud was convicted in 1997 of sexual battery without injury and lewd and lascivious conduct on a child younger than 16. He is listed as a sexual offender on the FDLE Web site. His offender status and his new address at Silver Lake Drive were updated Thursday, the site says.

There is no indication McCloud’s slaying was linked to his sex-offender record, Bowling said.

McCloud also was on probation for felony driving with a suspended license, according to the Department of Corrections. ..more.. by Larry Sullivan and Ron Bartlett

Leads sought as police probe double slaying
7-31-2007 Florida
Two people found dead in a local mobile home park last week were beaten to death, authorities say.

The bodies of Terrance Eugene McCloud and Karley Ann Collum were found discovered Friday morning off Silver Lake Road near Palatka.

Based on autopsies, medical examiners ruled McCloud, 36, and Collum, 30, died from blunt force trauma to the head, said Maj. Keith Riddick, chief of detectives and a spokesman for the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.

Crime scene specialists worked through the weekend inside the trailer in Lot 43 at the Silver Lake Oaks Mobile Home Park

No arrests have been made, but investigators are following up on leads, Riddick said in an interview Monday.

Information from the public is welcome, Riddick added.

“If anyone heard anything or saw anything that would be helpful in solving these deaths, we’d love to have it,” he said.

Investigators have confirmed Collum was alive late Wednesday night, when she told a friend she was going out with McCloud.

A neighbor heard a woman scream from McCloud’s home about 5 a.m. Thursday, but Riddick said authorities were not called.

Investigators say McCloud may have known his attacker since there were no signs of forced entry of the home, Riddick said.

A friend and co-worker described Collum, a resident of Interlachen since November, as energetic and straight-forward.

“She was unique,” Heather Kaminsky said. “Just like the way she spelled her name.”

Kaminsky worked with Collum at the PRC call center in Palatka, where they met while attending a training class and quickly became close friends.

“She was like a sister,” Kaminsky said.

Kaminsky said she feared something was wrong when Collum didn’t show up for work Thursday and Friday without calling in. She and other co-workers convinced the mobile home park manager to open McCloud’s home on Friday. They were fearful because Collum’s car was parked outside the trailer but Collum didn’t answer her cell phone.

“It just wasn’t right,” Kaminsky said. “I knew something was wrong,”

McCloud was found in the kitchen and Collum, the mother of a 9-year-old boy, was dead in the hallway.

Collum’s son was with a babysitter Wednesday night. Riddick said the child has since been placed in the care of relatives in Texas.

Collum met McCloud about two weeks before they were killed, Kaminsky said.

“They were hanging out,” she said. “They weren’t dating.”

Family members said McCloud worked at Matthews Moving and Storage, where he had been employed for more than 10 years. He had lived at the Silver Lake Drive residence a couple of months, they said.

“He didn’t bother nobody or nothing,” his aunt, Carmelia Mauesby, said Monday.

“He was a loving person. Everybody enjoyed being with him.”

A report in Saturday’s paper that McCloud’s grandmother was gravely ill was incorrect, Mauesby also said.

Collum is the second PRC employee slain this month.

On July 6, Stephen Richardson was found stabbed to death in his Palatka apartment. No arrests have been in his death and a $2,000 reward is being offered for information.

There is no indication the slayings are related, Riddick said.

McCloud was convicted in 1997 of sexual battery without injury and lewd and lascivious conduct on a child younger than 16, according to the state Department of Corrections. His Silver Lake address was updated Thursday on the state’s sex-offender Web site.

Authorities also say there was no indication McCloud’s slaying was linked to his sex-offender record. ..more.. by Larry Sullivan

CA- Suspect arrested in Orange County man's mysterious slaying

This is ONE example, of many, of our new death classification category, death by "sexual circumstances."

9-17-2009 California:

SAN DIEGO — Nearly two years after an Orange County man died under suspicious circumstances, police have made an arrest in the case.

Philong Huynh, 39, of San Diego, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a murder charge and a special-circumstance allegation of sodomy in the death of Dane Williams.

Huynh also pleaded not guilty to a separate sodomy charge in connection with the sexual assault of a second man.

Police said Huynh lives within 800 feet of where the body of Williams, 23, was found after he vanished.

Williams, of Huntington Beach and an employee of Hurley International, was visiting San Diego for the Action Sports Retailers Convention. In the early-morning hours of Jan. 26, 2008, he left a bar in the Gaslamp Quarter and seemingly disappeared.

Prosecutors said he was visibly intoxicated when he left the bar.

Williams' body was found Jan. 29 in an alley on Landis Street south of University Avenue near Colina del Sol Park in City Heights. The body was wrapped in a blanket and wearing a cap, neither of which belonged to him. His underwear was missing.

A manner of death was never determined, the Medical Examiner's Office said.

Investigators did not identify a suspect until this summer, when a man reported being the victim of a sex crime.

Deputy District Attorney Gretchen Means told a judge Tuesday that the victim met Huynh in the Gaslamp Quarter on June 6 and they ended up drinking and going to the beach. The next day, the male victim woke up in Huynh's bed.

“Previously he had said he had a headache and the defendant gave him two tablets,” Means said. “When he woke up he felt extremely sick and disoriented.”

The man went to a doctor that day and was diagnosed with “benzodiazepine intoxication” and showed signs of sexual assault, said the prosecutor, who described benzodiazepine as a central nervous system depressant. He, like Williams, is heterosexual, Means said.

On Aug. 19, DNA evidence from that alleged crime was matched through an FBI database to DNA found on Williams' body, said police Lt. Kevin Rooney. That led homicide investigators to Huynh, Rooney said.

Officers spotted Huynh driving Thursday on 43rd Street and Orange Avenue just after 5 p.m. and took him into custody.

Huynh, who works for a medical-equipment supply company, lives with his mother on Wightman Street near Shiloh Road, about a block from where Williams'body was found. Police served search warrants at the home and a former address.

Means told a judge Tuesday that several pharmaceuticals were found at Huynh's residence, including a benzodiazepine prescription in his name. The prescription was filled in January 2008, the same month that Williams' body was found.

Some commonly prescribed medications classified as benzodiazepines include, Xanax, Valium, Ativan and Rohypnol, the last of which is commonly referred to as the “date-rape drug” because of its involvement in many sexual assault cases, according to the Center for Substance Abuse Research at the University of Maryland at College Park. A victim is given the drug, which causes the person to black out and have trouble remembering any assaults, experts have previously said.

San Diego Superior Court Judge Polly Shamoon ordered Huynh to be held in county jail without bail and appointed the Public Defender's Office to represent him.

A photo of Huynh was released by police, who asked other potential victims to contact them. He is not registered as a sex offender, Rooney said.

At the time of his disappearance and for months afterward, family, friends and co-workers handed out fliers throughout the city in the hopes of solving the mystery. A $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest was also offered.

The special allegation in Williams' death makes Huynh eligible for the death penalty if convicted. Prosecutors typically decide whether to seek the death penalty or life in prison without parole after a preliminary hearing in which a judge decides if there is sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to trial. ..Source.. by Angelica Martinez and Dana Littlefield

GA- The Christopher Michael Barrios, Jr. Story

March 2007 Georgia:

This story must be prefaced with other information which the media, in all reports we can find, have failed to report and is very relevant to this case. Christopher, pictured on the right, was killed by three people -two of which were registered sex offenders- because Christopher lived in the same trailer park as those just mentioned.

Christopher lived there because his father was also a registered sex offender (Christopher Michael Barrios, Sr.) who was forced to live where the Georgia Sex Offender Residency law permitted; the trailer park was a permitted area. Accordingly, the state's "Residency Law" played a significant part in little Christopher's death.

While there is no way to determine if the trailer park was a cluster of former offenders because the media never investigated that aspect, we do know that the law caused these folks to live in close proximity to each other. Why the media never brought this out is unknown. Clearly this case shows that such laws provide no protection for families of registered offenders.

Molester, His Parents Charged In Christopher's 'Horrific' Slaying

Prosecutor To Seek Death Penalty Against 3

BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- A convicted child molester and his father took turns sexually assaulting a 6-year-old boy while the molester's mother watched, then they choked the boy to death, according to an indictment returned by the Glynn County grand jury on Wednesday.

The indictment charges George Edenfield and both his parents with murder, kidnapping and child molestation in the slaying of young Christopher Michael Barrios, whose body was found last Thursday inside a trash bag dumped by a roadside.

Glynn County District Attorney Stephen D. Kelley said he will seek the death penalty against 32-year-old George Edenfield, who has a prior child molestation conviction from 1997, and his parents, David and Peggy Edenfield. "This is one of the most horriffic crimes that I have seen in 21 years of prosecutions," Kelley said.

Christopher went missing for a week before police found his body about three miles from his trailer park home outside Brunswick, a Georgia port city 60 miles south of Savannah. The suspects lived in a mobile home across the street from the boy's grandmother.

The indictment contains grim details about the case that police and prosecutors had not previously revealed. It says Christopher died from asphixation March 8 -- the day he was reported missing -- after the suspects choked him while "ignoring his complaints that they were hurting him."

"It makes me sick and it makes me so angry," said Christopher's grandmother. "All four of them need to be charged with murder and they don't need to be kept alive long. They killed our baby. They don't even need to be alive now."

The indictment does not say which of three caused the boy's death.

It also claims George Edenfield and his 58-year-old father sodomized the boy and forced him to perform oral sex while Peggy Edenfield watched and masturbated.

"They deserve the worst, for them to torture my son like that, every last one of them," said Mike Barrios, the slain boy's father.

A friend of the Edenfield family, Donald Dale, was indicted on charges of concealing a death and tampering with evidence. Kelley said Dale did not become involved until after Christopher had been killed.

Nathan Williams, the attorney for 57-year-old Peggy Edenfield, declined to comment Wednesday. Attorneys for George and David Edenfield did not immediately return phone calls.

Glynn County police arrested the Edenfields four days after Christopher vanished while playing alone outside. Police Chief Matt Doering said all three suspects confessed to playing roles in the boy's abduction.

Police have said Dale admitted to investigators he helped the Edenfields dispose of Christopher's body. Other charges against the Edenfields include false imprisonment, cruelty to children and enticing a child for indecent purposes.

Police have described George Edenfield as mentally slow, but capable of understanding right from wrong. They have said he is not retarded.

Christopher Barrios Jr. disappeared from a playground hear his home about 6 p.m. on March 8. His body was found a week later in a trash bag near the Burnswick airport.

Ironically, the Edenfields moved into the trailer park where Christopher lived last year because of a Georgia law intended to keep child molesters away from children.

Sheriffs' deputies told George Edenfield in September that he had to leave his home near downtown Brunswick because it was too close to a playground. Georgia law prohibits registered sex offenders from living within 1,000 feet of schools and other places that draw children.

His family went to live in the trailer park in October after George Edenfield was arrested for failing to move as ordered.
He pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to probation March 5, three days before Christopher disappeared.

George Edenfield was required to register as a sex offender after he pleaded guilty in 1997 to molesting two boys, ages 7 and 9. Prosecutors said he rubbed his clothed body "in a sexual manner" against the boys, who also were fully dressed. He was sentenced then to 10 years on probation.

His father, David Edenfield, pleaded guilty to incest in 1994. He was accused of having sex with an adult relative who was not his son. ..Source.. by News4 Georgia.com

Defendant ruled incompetent in Ga. child's killing

8-3-2010:

BRUNSWICK, Ga. — A judge has found a 34-year-old convicted child molester incompetent to stand trial for the sexual abuse killing of a 6-year-old boy.

Superior Court Judge Stephen Scarlett declared George Edenfield incompetent on Tuesday to stand trial for the killing of Christopher Michael Barrios Jr. in 2007.

Scarlett ordered Edenfield committed to a state mental hospital.

The child was molested and strangled inside a mobile home before his body was wrapped in trash bags and dumped near a road. Edenfield's father was convicted of murder, and his mother also faces charges in the case.

Prosecutors and Edenfield's lawyers asked for the declaration and cited evaluations by state and defense psychologists showing that Edenfield has a diminished mental capacity and is unable to assist in his own defense.

The judge also ordered state mental health experts to issue a prognosis in 90 days about whether it's likely Edenfield ever will be competent for trial.

"He's smart as a darn whip. He's got them all fooled. He's just putting on a good show," Christopher's grandmother, Sue Rodriguez, said after the hearing.

Prosecutors previously conceded that Edenfield has a diminished mental capacity, but they had insisted he was competent to stand trial.

Edenfield's father, David Edenfield, 61, was found guilty of murdering and molesting Christopher last October. The jury imposed the death penalty.

Christopher went missing March 8, 2007, from the Brunswick mobile home park where his father and grandmother both had homes. His body was found a week later.

Edenfield's family had moved into a home across the street from Christopher's grandmother four months earlier. Police found one of Christopher's toys, a Star Wars lightsaber, in Edenfield's front yard.

In a recorded confession played for jurors, David Edenfield said he and his son sodomized the boy, then choked him to death. He is seeking a new trial on grounds that a prosecutor inflamed the jury by calling him an animal.

No trial date has been set for Peggy Edenfield, 58. She will not face the death penalty because she testified against her husband, and agreed to testify against her son. ..Source.. by AJC.com
