Dania Beach man kills girlfriend, hangs himself at Greenbelt Park, police say

Posted in Related Deaths
8-31-2012 Florida:

A man found hanging from a tree in Greenbelt Park on Sunday morning apparently first killed his girlfriend before turning to suicide, authorities said.

The body of Louise Attardi-Cramer, 50, dead from blunt force trauma, was discovered in her bedroom early Sunday, said Keyla Concepcion, a spokeswoman for the Broward Sheriff's Office.

About four hours later, Michael Kanuf, 49, was found by a couple taking a morning stroll through a secluded area of the park adjacent to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Concepcion said.

Police say Kanuf left a note outside a relative's home admitting to the crime and saying that he was going to commit suicide.

After receiving a call at about 6:30 a.m. requesting that the Sheriff's Office perform a welfare check of Attardi-Cramer, police found her body in her home in the 5300 block of Southwest 29th Way, Concepcion said.

Police spent the next several hours, Concepcion said, searching for Kanuf, the father of Attardi-Cramer's teenage son.

When the couple made the grisly discovery in the park, they called 911. The body was confirmed to be Kanuf, Concepcion said.

When reached by telephone Sunday afternoon, a relative of Attardi-Cramer's declined to comment: "This is a time of mourning for the family and nobody wants to talk about what's going on."

Records from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement show that Kanuf is a registered sexual offender stemming from a 1993 conviction out of Miami-Dade County for lewd or lascivious fondling of a child younger than 16.

Two men dead, one hospitalized in Dalton shooting

Posted in Related Deaths
4-12-2012 New Hampshire:

DALTON -- Two men are dead and a third was hospitalized following what law enforcement officials are calling an apparent shooting incident. The incident occurred yesterday at the residence of Wayne Ainsworth at 643 Whitefield Road in Dalton.

A joint press release issued early yesterday evening by N.H. Attorney General Michael A. Delaney, State Police Colonel Robert Quinn, Dalton Police Chief Mario Audit, and Whitefield Police Chief William Colborn said all three men, whose identities have not yet been released, had apparent gunshot wounds. The identities of the men were withheld last night pending notification of family members. Police said autopsies for the two deceased men will be scheduled.

Ainsworth made headlines in January 2010, when he was married to Joseph Besk, an inmate at the Northern NH Correctional Facility in a prison ceremony. At the time Besk was serving a 10-20 year sentence on felonious sexual assault charges. The two men met in prison while Ainsworth was also serving a 10-year sentence, the last five of which was spent in the same cell as Besk. The marriage was believed to be the first same sex marriage in the NH Correctional System.

It is unclear whether Ainsworth or Besk were involved in the Thursday afternoon incident. According to the NH sex offender online registry, both men resided at the Whitefield Road address.

Police said the investigation is still ongoing but there is no reason to believe the public is in danger. ..Source.. by Melissa Grima

2 men killed at registered NH sex offenders' home

DALTON, N.H.—Two men were shot to death Thursday at a northern New Hampshire home listed on the state's sex offender registry. A third man was injured in the shooting.

Wayne Ainsworth, who lived in the home, was injured and was in stable condition at a hospital, said his sister, Shari Souliere, who was briefed by police. She didn't know who else may have been living in the home, and she wasn't provided with details about what may have transpired, she said.

Investigators didn't release the victims' names or other details about the investigation. But the attorney general's office said there was no threat to the public.

The state's sex offender registry lists two offenders at the address, 54-year-old Ainsworth and 48-year-old Joseph Besk. Both were convicted of aggravated felonious sexual assault. A story by The Berlin Daily Sun says the two married in 2010, while Besk was finishing his prison sentence.

Decade-Old Sex Case Possible Motive for Murders

9-11-2012:

TRUMANN, AR (abc24.com) - Could the possible motive in the deaths of a terminally ill man and his caretaker be a sex crime dating back more than a decade?

On Sunday, Arkansas State Police arrested John Arnoult, 28, of Jonesboro and charged him in the September 2nd murders of John Poff and Connie Cole.

Poff and Cole were found murdered in Poff's mobile home in Trumann.

"My sister and I both knew whoever done this couldn't have known my mother," said Laci Cole, Connie Cole's daughter. "Nobody would have ever wanted to hurt her."

Court documents: homicide victims found lying in bed, shot in head

11-8-2012 North Carolina:

Clyde and Ida Valentine were found lying in the bed of a back bedroom of her northern Charlotte home last week, dead from gunshot wounds to the head, according to a search warrant obtained by the Observer on Thursday.

Still, police have not said who they believe is responsible for the deaths. Clyde Valentine had tape over his mouth. Police say the case is classified as a death investigation and spokeswoman Officer Jessica Lawrence said investigators were not looking for a suspect.

Authorities said a man called police on Nov. 1 and said he’d found his parents’ bodies in the home on Swift Arrow Lane. The search warrant identified that man as Malcolm Valentine, who came to his the house after his girlfriend said she couldn’t get anyone to come to the door.

Records show the Valentines had divorced in 2004, and Clyde Valentine had remarried three years ago.

Officers at the scene told reporters they believe the deaths were domestic-related. But they would not comment about whether the deaths were related to child sex charges filed against Clyde Valentine earlier this year.

Clyde Valentine was arrested in June on three felony counts of taking indecent liberties with a child. In September, he was charged with one count of statutory rape. He was expected to appear in court Nov. 13 on the charges.

Detectives said during the summer that the charges against Clyde Valentine involved a relative, and not a student at Phillip O. Berry Academy where he once taught electronics. ..Source.. by Cleve R. Wootson Jr.

Man found dead with wife had protection order against family member

A day after Clyde Valentine and his wife Ida were found in their home neighbors are still wondering what happened.

"It gave me goose bumps just to hear about it," said neighbor Darcy Farman.

The bodies were found Thursday inside the home on Swift Arrow Lane by the couple's son.

Details of trouble inside that home are starting to unravel.

A source confirmed to Eyewitness News that Clyde Valentine had a domestic violence protection order against a family member who was not his wife Ida.

Slain Texas teen Shania Gray had sexual assault charges pending against murder suspect

9-10-2012 Texas:

A Texas man has been charged with murdering a 16-year-old girl who police believe was killed to keep her from testifying at the man's sexual assault trial for raping her.

Police in the Dallas suburb of Carrollton say Franklin B. Davis, 30, of Irving, was charged with capital murder Sunday after confessing to the death of Shania Gray. Gray was last seen alive Thursday afternoon at Hebron High School in Carrollton. Her body was found Saturday in a secluded area near the Trinity River.

Carrollton police spokesman Jon Stovall told The Associated Press in an email that police believe Davis killed Gray because she was about to testify against him.

A spokeswoman for Gray's family, Sherry Ramsey, told The Dallas Morning News that Gray met Davis when she babysat his two children. Ramsey said that later, afer the teen declined many requests to babysit, Gray told her grandmother that Davis had raped her.

The crime was reported to Mesquite police, and Davis was charged with four counts of sexual assault of a child.

Ramsey said Davis had warned Gray he would kill her if she told anyone about the assault.

According to an arrest warrant, Davis contacted Gray through social media and pretended to be someone else in an attempt to get information about the sexual assault case. Davis then used a pre-paid cellphone to set up a meeting with Gray at her high school on Thursday.

Davis told WFAA-TV in a jailhouse interview that he tracked Gray down because he wanted to prove his innocence in the sexual assault case.

"I needed to get some kind of evidence, some kind of proof myself to show I did not have sex with her and that she's lying," Davis told the television station.

Davis told authorities that Gray was surprised to see him but got into his car when he told her he wanted to talk to her about the sexual assault case.

'Incestuous' Sex Images Found on Josh Powell's Computer Before Murder-Suicide

2-10-2012 Washington:

(NewsCore) - Images depicting incestuous sex between a parent and child were found on Josh Powell's computer and handed over to Washington investigators just days before he brutally murdered his two children and then killed himself.

The material stored on the computer was deemed to be so disturbing that one psychologist working on the Powell's custody case recommended that the court prevent the children from being returned to their father, KING 5 reported late Thursday, citing Thomas Shapley of Washington's Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS).

The images included very realistic "lifelike" simulations of incestuous sex acts, Pierce County officers said, and may have prompted a judge to order that Josh Powell undergo a psychosexual evaluation, according to the report.

Police in West Valley, Utah, discovered the documents and sent them to the Pierce County Sheriff's Department under a restrictive court order Feb. 1.

Missing Cleveland Mother Latasha Jackson, 13 MO Chaniya Wynn Killed by Thomas Lorde in Double Murder-Suicide

2-19-2012 Ohio:

Cleveland, OH, police have confirmed Latasha Jackson and her 13 month old daughter, Chaniya Wynn, who were kidnapped by her ex-boyfriend, Thomas Lorde, 35, yesterday afternoon, were found dead Sunday morning in a double murder-suicide. The bodies were found with Thomas Lorde’s in a closed garage of an unoccupied structure on Union Avenue. All were found with gunshot wounds to the head.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner Office will determine the official cause of death for all three individuals, Fox 8 reports. Latasha Jackson and Chaniya Wynn were taken at gunpoint by Thomas Lorde on the streets at about 11:44 a.m. Saturday and were last seen walking south down East 72nd Street. This is a sad, sad case and the mother and child didn’t deserve the hand they were dealt by Thomas Lorde, who is a registered sex offender with a long and violent criminal history.

How did she get herself tangled up with such a character? Some women need to be careful of the men they invite into their homes and not just for the sake of having a man. ..Source.. by Janet Shan

Surveillance Captures Last Images of Mother, Daughter

2-19-2012 Ohio:

CLEVELAND — An Amber Alert ends in tragedy as a Cleveland woman, her one-year-old daughter and their suspected kidnapper are found dead, in what investigators believe was a double murder-suicide.

The bodies of 19-year-old Latasha Jackson, her daughter Chaniya Wynn and their alleged killer, 35-year-old Thomas Lorde, were discovered in the garage of a vacant property in the 7000 block of Union Avenue, just before 3:00 a.m. Sunday.

Fox 8 News has obtained the last known images of the victims, captured just moments before the kidnapping unfolded.

Surveillance cameras were rolling outside a carry-out on Saturday morning, as Latasha Jackson pushed a stroller with little Chaniya inside. Joining them on the trip to the store was Latasha’s 14-year-old brother, David Thomas.

Little did they know that a short time after the video was captured, Latasha and Chaniya would be abducted at gunpoint, by Latasha’s boyfriend, Thomas Lorde, a convicted sexual predator who had threatened to kill her baby after the child’s father allegedly smashed Lorde’s windshield with a brick.

David Thomas told Fox 8, “I really didn’t think he would actually do that, though. I didn’t actually think he would end up killing my one-year-old niece and my sister. I didn’t think he had it in him.”

According to employees at the carry-out, Latasha Jackson showed no signs that she felt impending danger or was afraid of Thomas Lorde, a man she had dated for a couple of months after a chance meeting at a bus stop.

“She was laughing. She was smiling, and she left, and she said, ‘Bye,’ you know,” said clerk Mike Mansour.

But the victim’s brother said when they left the store, Thomas Lorde was waiting for them.

“He walked up. He was like, ‘Check this out.’ He pulled out a gun and pointed it at me, and told me to go on, and I was there looking around, and that’s when he grabbed the stroller from my sister, told my sister to walk, and he called her a ‘B,’ said David Thomas. “And that’s when I walked up the street, and I went back to the house and called the police.”

That phone call set off an Amber Alert across Greater Cleveland, and prompted the FBI and Cleveland police to offer a $10,000 reward for information on the whereabouts of the two victims. Then came the discovery of the bodies of Latasha Jackson, her beloved Chaniya and Thomas Lorde, in the garage of the vacant property, a short distance from the carry-out.

Investigators said it appeared Lorde killed Chaniya and Latasha, and then himself.

“I believe my sister; she was a fighter. She wasn’t going to let it happen,” said David Thomas. “I believe she tried to fight, and that’s how she ended up dying.”

Those who knew Latasha Jackson and little Chaniya are stunned by the level of Thomas Lorde’s brutality, in what they believe was his quest for control and revenge.

Jean Bullock, who is Latasha’s aunt and Chaniya’s great-aunt, told Fox 8, “He’s cold, and he’s heartless, and everyone knew that.”

“It’s so sad this happen because nobody think it would happen like that,” added Mike Mansour. “He killed the baby; for what? You know?”

In a strange twist, the garage where the bodies were found on Sunday, is just a couple of blocks away from a field on East 71th Street, where the body of 11-year-old kidnapping victim Shakira Johnson was found in 2003. Her murder remains an open investigation. ..Source.. by Jack Shea,

Police: Delaware Train Deaths Possible Double Suicide

Note to the person commenting: We do not gather facts, we show what is reported in the news, whatever happened in the past, is no longer relevant. Today the fact that someone committed suicide who had a prior sexual conviction, is the only thing relevant. There are many times that we wish history could be changed, but that is not possible now.

DELAWARE -- Police say a convicted child rapist and his sister were killed after lying down in front of a train Wednesday morning.

Just before 4:00 a.m., Delaware police received a call from Norfolk Southern Dispatch, saying a train had struck a pedestrian near Vernon Ave.

After arriving on the scene, officers found the bodies of two people, along with an apparent suicide note in a sealed plastic bag.

The deceased have been identified as Roy T. Weatherford III, 44, and his sister, Kara McGlenaghan, 33.

On March 2, an indictment was filed on Weatherford for six child pornography counts. He had previously served 15 years in prison for raping and drugging a female, and was released in 2007.

An arrest warrant was due to be issued Wednesday, after Weatherford failed to appear at his arraignment.

The note found at the scene states:
We are Kara McGlenaghan and Roy Weatherford. We are brother and sister. Please call Mom.

Tell the train guy not to feel bad. He did us a big favor and we wish him peace in life.
The Delaware County Coroner is assisting police in their investigation. No alcohol or drugs were found at the scene. ..Source.. by ABC6.com

Siblings' train-track suicide extends family's turmoil

4-6-2012 Ohio:

The contents of the purse contained explanations, if not answers.

Kara McClenaghan handed it to her 18-year-old nephew the evening before she joined her half brother, Roy Weatherford, on the railroad track in Delaware.

“We’re going on a trip. Here’s the key, here’s my purse,” she said. “We’re going away for a while, and we probably won’t talk to you for a long time.”

McClenaghan called her niece, Kierra Weatherford, in Grove City around 11:30 Tuesday night. She claimed that she had misdialed and apologized, but Kierra knew better. It was no mistake.

“I just want to tell you I love you and to take care of yourself,” the aunt told the niece she called “Ki.”

Less than five hours later, McClenaghan and the man who had raped her as a child were dead, their odd relationship ending under the wheels of a train.

Kierra Weatherford has been through a lot in her life. After her mother hanged herself, she, too, tried to commit suicide.

The 24-year-old wants people in even the most-dysfunctional families to know: There is help. There is hope.

She wants others, to the extent that they can look past the taboo, to understand her aunt and uncle, how they looked out for one another and why they did what they did, in both life and death.

The family opened McClenaghan’s purse after the officers arrived on Wednesday morning to tell Susan Weatherford that two more of her children had killed themselves. It was stuffed with letters and notes to family written in the days before they died.

Weatherford, 44, had served 15-plus years in prison for raping his half sister for at least six years, beginning when she was 6 and he was 15. He wrote that he would rather die than again waste away behind the walls and razor wire.

He was in trouble again, accused of downloading child pornography while living with two other sex offenders on the South Side of Columbus. He said that one of his roommates was viewing the porn on his laptop computer without his knowledge.

McClenaghan, 35, counted on her half brother to take care of her, much as she had taken care of Kierra and Kierra’s half brother after their mother killed herself.

McClenaghan was a happy, friendly person before undergoing surgery in 2006 to remove a small part of her brain to control her severe epilepsy. The doctors warned that her personality might change. In the years since, she had become an increasingly angry woman.

If Roy was determined to go, his half sister was determined to go with him. The letters recounted how they argued and fought over life or death.

“She didn’t want him to go by himself,” Kierra said. “He didn’t want my aunt to go with him. But my aunt is very stubborn. He tried to talk her out of it, and she wouldn’t have it. She said, ‘ I’m going of my own will.’”

Kierra concedes that the relationship between her aunt and uncle as adults was “taboo” to many, but not sexual. “What they had was very different, we’re not denying that. We didn’t really approve, but we didn’t have a choice but to love them.”

As a 15-year-old girl, McClenaghan had asked a judge in 1992 to give her half brother probation and treatment rather than prison.

Kierra said her uncle deserved every day that he served, her aunt’s astonishing forgiveness aside.

They never talked about it, nor did anyone else. “It just wasn’t something that was brought up in our family,” Kierra said.

Weatherford and McClenaghan had lived together in a Delaware apartment for about a year after his parole ended. He read a lot, watched the History Channel and always was playing World of Warcraft on his laptop.

McClenaghan was obsessed with music, and headphones were seldom absent from her ears.

“They tried to live the best they could. They kept to themselves,” Kierra said. “They didn’t bother anybody.”

Kierra is angry at her aunt and uncle’s shared decision. It was selfish. They knew it would destroy their 64-year-old mother, who considered her family cursed even before Roy and Kara died.

Kierra can’t fathom choosing death over life. She, herself, was sexually abused and raped as a teenager by family “friends.” Her mother, Deanna Lucas, was a mentally ill alcoholic and cocaine addict who hanged herself in her mother’s garage in Delaware in 2002 at age 30.

Kierra never knew her father. Children services officials contacted him after her mother died. He wanted nothing to do with his 15-year-old daughter.

At age 18, Kierra attempted suicide by swallowing lithium and a half-bottle of Tylenol. The mental-health therapists brought her back.

She urges those with thoughts of harming themselves to speak up, get help.

“My life has not been a hunky-dory story. If God didn’t think I could handle all of this, it would not have happened. It’s sad, but it’s shaped who I have become today.”

Kierra lived in New Jersey for two years before losing her job as a receptionist; she returned to the Columbus area a month ago. She’s looking for a job and plans to obtain her high-school equivalency diploma.

“You can’t let the past shape your future. You have to take it day to day. There are people who can help, no matter the situation you are in. I value life greatly.”

Kara McClenaghan and Roy Weatherford, she says, were beaten down, incapable of finding the strength to ask for help. They had lost hope.

“You can’t lose hope,” Kierra said. “Life is very precious.” ..Source.. by Randy Ludlow

Double suicide claims woman, brother who raped her

4-10-2012 Ohio:

A brother and sister who lived together under bizarre circumstances died the same way last week, stepping in front of a train in Delaware in an apparent double suicide.

Kara McClenaghan, 35, and Roy Weatherford III, 44, whose last known address was on East Central Avenue, died after being struck by a train early April 4.

Norfolk Southern Dispatch notified Delaware police that one of its trains had struck a pedestrian near Vernon Avenue at around 3:56 a.m.

Police found the bodies at the scene along with blankets, pillows and a note enclosed in a paper bag.

The note identified the pair and asked that their mother be notified, adding, "Tell the train guy not to feel bad. He did us a big favor and we wish him peace in life."

The back story of McClenaghan and Weatherford reveals anything but peace.

Weatherford was a registered sex offender and served 15 years in prison for repeatedly raping McClenaghan, apparently beginning when she was 6 years old, according to Delaware County criminal records. Weatherford pleaded guilty to rape in 1992 and, despite his sister's pleas for hospitalization and probation, was sentenced to 15 years in prison, according to Columbus Dispatch reports.

Weatherford, who also was convicted of corrupting McClenaghan with drugs, was paroled in 2007, reports said.

He was charged last month with downloading child pornography while living in Columbus with two other sex offenders in 2010, according to the Dispatch.

The Delaware County coroner was called to the scene of the suicides and is assisting with the investigation. All immediate family members have been contacted, officials said. ..Source.. by KRISTINA THOMAS

Man who plunged from tower was suspect in 3 slayings

4-8-2012 Mississippi:

BAY ST. LOUIS -- Authorities suspect a twice-convicted felon killed his mother, stepfather and girlfriend at their home on Citizen Street before he climbed a cellphone tower in Waveland and plunged about 300 feet to his death.

The triple homicide and two other homicides Saturday in Hancock County marked what is believed to be a record of five homicides reported in a single day in the coastal counties.

“It was like a double full moon,” said Waveland Police Chief Kenny Hurt, previously chief investigator of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.

“All of us officials and investigators have been talking about how we don’t recall ever having this many at a time. We had a double homicide several years ago, but never anything like this,” Hurt said.

No motives have been revealed in any of the killings.

Authorities on Sunday identified victims in the slayings on Citizen Street as Wilton Bernard Jr., 69, his wife, Jeanie Bernard, 66, and Kathleen Deese, 50.

Deese was the suspect’s girlfriend, said Bay Deputy Police Chief Christine Johnson.

The suspect, Anthony Garrett, 46, died later Saturday night as authorities tried to talk him down from a tower and a crowd gathered to watch. Investigators are considering the possibility that he slipped and fell while trying to get down.

Witnesses reported Garrett shouted at onlookers and law enforcement officers, claiming he had killed his family with a hammer, and said he had been in prison a number of years.

Garrett was convicted of sexual battery in 1985 and again in 1988. He had given officials his mother’s home address as his address for the Mississippi Sex Offender Registry. The website said his picture was last updated March 27.

Back-to-back autopsies were performed Sunday, but authorities have not yet said how the three on Citizen Street were killed.

The Bernards were retired and mostly kept to themselves, said their next-door neighbor, who asked not to be identified. She said the couple had lived there about 10 years and had recently finished planting flowers in their yard.

Crime-scene tape was still tied around the yard Sunday afternoon. An American flag waved in the breeze from a short pole on a tripod-style planter of flowers in front of the light-colored stucco home, where sego palms grow underneath a set of double windows in front.

Three vehicles were parked on the property. A pickup truck and station wagon were in the front yard, and a car was parked under a lean-to built adjacent to a shed.

Public records show Garrett and Deese had previously lived in Meridian.

They apparently all lived together in a house at the corner of Citizen Street and Old Spanish Trail. Citizen Street is a dead-end road. Numerous motorists passed by and slowed down to look at the house Sunday and turned around and left.

Police said the three were found dead at 7:42 p.m. Saturday.

The neighbor said she had no idea anything had happened until a string of patrol cars drove up as she sat on her porch. She said authorities were still there when she went to bed about 3 a.m. Sunday. The woman said she heard no gunshots or sounds of distress.

Authorities linked Garrett to the slayings after Waveland police and Hancock County deputies responded to a report of a man who had jumped a fence and climbed onto a cell phone tower at U.S. 90 and Kiln-Waveland Cutoff Road in Waveland.

The tower is a three- or four-mile drive from the home on Citizen Street.

The sight of a man near the top of the tower drew a crowd of several dozen from neighboring businesses including the Knock Knock Lounge.

The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation are assisting in the probe of those incidents. ..Source.. by ROBIN FITZGERALD

MOULTRIE — A Colquitt County man was one of three people fatally shot early Monday morning at a residence near the Colquitt-Tift County line in what is believed a murder/suicide.

The Observer has learned that Darrell Dewayne Ward, 42, one of those who died at the Innis Road residence, lived a short distance from the location where the shootings took place.

Tift County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Bobby Brannen confirmed earlier Monday that three people were dead at the residence, located off U.S. Highway 319 South near Omega.

Tift County’s 911 center received a call shortly before 6:30 a.m. about a person being shot, Brannen said.

A fourth person was transported by air for emergency medical treatment.

Brannen did not release any additional information, and the other fatalities have not been identified. It is believed, but not confirmed, that two of the dead are related to the woman who was air lifted, possibly mother and father.

Ward had moved back and forth between Colquitt and Tift counties since his release in April 2007 after he served nearly 10 years at Autry State Prison in Pelham, authorities said. He pleaded guilty Oct. 31, 1997, to the rape of a Lowndes County woman and began serving his sentence in state prison in December of that year.

On Jan. 15, Ward changed his sex-offender registration to Colquitt County from Tift County, after having moved from here to Tift County in 2010.

In a plea arrangement on the rape charge in Lowndes County, counts of false imprisonment, aggravated stalking and burglary were dismissed at the time he pleaded to the rape charge, District Attorney David Miller said.

The Georgia State Patrol charged Ward in July 2010 in Colquitt County with driving under the influence, failure to maintain lane, failure to provide assistance and driving without a license on his person. GBI: Ward was shooter in murder-suicide

3-27-2012:

TIFTON — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation Sylvester Office and the Tift County Sheriff’s Office began a joint investigation at 7:30 a.m. Monday into a murder/suicide that occurred in Tift County, the GBI reported.

Kim Baker, special agent in charge, provided a press release Tuesday stating that two adults discovered deceased inside the residence located at 103 Iniss Road in Tifton have been identified as James Williams Peters Sr., approximately 57 years of age, and Shirley Ann Peters, approximately 53 years of age. Both had sustained what appeared to be gunshot wounds.

A third person also found deceased at the residence was identified as Darrell Dewayne Ward, approximately 43 years of age, who had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest.

So far, the crime scene examination and interviews conducted by the GBI and the Tift County authorities indicate that sometime after 10 p.m. Sunday, Ward drove to the Peters’ residence, armed with a handgun, and mortally wounded James and Shirley Peters, shot their daughter and then fatally shot himself. The daughter is expected to recover from the injuries that she sustained during the attack.

The bodies of the deceased are being transported to the GBI Crime Lab for autopsies.

The investigation by the GBI, TCSO and the Tift County Coroner’s Office continues.

Police: Killer accused man of molestation, gunned him down

1-26-2012 Washington:

A Des Moines man accused of killing a man after accusing him of molesting children has been charged with murder.

King County prosecutors contend Denzil R. Moore shot Thomas R. Humphries at point-blank range during an argument inside Moore’s pickup truck on Jan. 10. The Des Moines man and a purported accomplice are alleged to have then dumped Humphries’ body at a vacant house in Auburn, where it lay undiscovered for days.

“Moore effectively executed a man,” Senior Deputy Prosecutor Don Raz told the court. Moore, 41, has threatened to kill others who know the details of the killing and is believed to have a list of people to kill, the prosecutor added.

A review of court records showed Humphries has not been arrested for or convicted of sex crimes in Washington. He was not listed on the county sex offender registry.

5-1-2012 Mississippi:

PEARL, Miss. — A police investigator was killed Tuesday in a shootout with a suspect, officials said.

Senior Investigator Mike Walters was shot in the head as he and other detectives tried to serve warrants on a suspect wanted for sexual battery.

Upon entering an apartment in Pearl, police located a man hiding in a bathtub who began to resist arrest, according to The Officer Down Memorial Page.

Officers used a TASER against the subject, who opened fire on the officers and struck Walters in the face. Another officer returned fire and killed the man.

A helicopter airlifted Walters and two other injured officers to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, but Walters was declared dead, The Clarion Ledger reports.

Paying tribute to the fallen officer, Mayor Brad Rogers told a news conference,"It's a job most of us probably wouldn't do."

The two officers injured in the incident are reportedly in stable condition. ..Source.. by PoliceOne Staff

Slain officer may be 1st in Pearl killed in line of duty

A slain officer is the first from Pearl Police Department to die in the line of duty since the town’s incorporation in 1973, said Chief Ben Schuler.

Investigator Mike Walter, 32, was killed by a gunman who holed up in a bathroom while police served a search warrant for sexual assault and molestation.

The suspect, Carnell Gaines, 30, did not answer the door when police knocked, so they had an apartment complex manager open his door. As they searched the apartment, they came across him in the bathroom.

When Gaines would not show his hands, an officer went for his taser, and Gaines opened fire, killing Walter, a father, husband, and former professional baseball player.

Walter is from San Diego, Calif., according to a release put out by Pearl spokesman Lt. Butch Townsend. He played professional baseball for the Houston Astros from 1993-2000.

Friends of the family said he met his wife, Jeanne, while he was playing baseball, and moved back to Mississippi so she could be closer to home.

The Walters have an 11-year old daughter, Bailey.

He was hired by Pearl in February 2009 as a patrol officer, and moved up quickly to the position of investigator, Townsend said.

“Mike was a beacon of sunshine,” said Townsend in the release. “No words can express our feelings of loss at this time.”

The other officers injured in the shooting were Investigator Dave McCarley, who was shot in the hand and the leg, and Shaun Terwilliger, who received injuries to his forearm that were not gun-related.

McCarley’s injuries are serious, but Townsend said he should make a full recovery with surgery.

“One of the bad parts about our business is the fact that it must go on,” Townsend wrote. “The thin blue line cannot be allowed to be broken. Now we face that task without our brother Mike by our side. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers. A good man was lost today.” ..Source.. by The Clarion-Ledger

2 Officers shot in Pearl; Officer, Suspect Killed

A Pearl police officer was shot and killed today at the Colony Park Apartments in Pearl. Another officer was also shot and a 3rd injured. The suspect, 30-year-old Carnell Gaines Jr., was also shot and killed.

Rankin County District Attorney Michael Guest identified the slain officer as Investigator Mike Walter. He was shot in the head.

University of Mississippi Medical Center spokesman Jack Mazurak said the slain officer died at 11:56 a.m.

Mazurak said the two other officers were in good condition.

Michael Guest confirms that Officer Dave McCarley was shot in the leg and hand and transported by ambulance to UMC. His injuries do not appear to be life threatening. Officer Shawn Terwilliger was injured at the scene but not from gunfire. He also is being treated at UMC.

According to officials, just after 11 a.m. several officers attempted to serve a search warrant and an arrest warrant on 30-year-old Carnell Gaines Jr., who lived in Building 24 at the apartment complex.

When no one answered the door, police got the apartment manager to open the unit. While searching, officers discovered Gaines hiding in the bathtub of a rear bedroom and bath.

Officers reported that Gaines was uncooperative and was about to be tazed when Gaines drew a weapon and began firing. The officers returned fire.

Two officers were shot and another injured during the shootout. Gaines was shot and killed. One of the shot officers later died at University Medical Center in Jackson. The two other officers are listed in good and fair condition.

A neighbor told Fox 40 News that Gaines lived in the apartment with his girlfriend who was pregnant.

According to police, the arrest warrant was for sexual battery and the search warrant was for child pornography. Gaines also has a drug conviction from 2002.

Lieutenant Butch Townsend released this statement for Pearl Police Department:

Today the Pearl Police Department lost an officer in the line of duty. This is a sad first for our town that was incorporated in 1973.

Our beloved friend and comrade, Investigator Michael J. Walter, known to us simply as Mike, was thirty seven years old. He is survived by his loving wife Jeanne and the absolute light of his life, his daughter Bailey age eleven.

Mike also leaves behind his parents John and Judy Walter in their native San Diego, California.

Besides his family, Mike had three passions: the San Diego Chargers, professional baseball and law enforcement.

Mike played professional baseball for the Houston Astros from 1993 – 2000. Mike was hired by the Pearl Police Department in February of 09 as a patrol officer. His knowledge, intellect and inquiring mind enabled him to move to the position of investigator in rapid time, assuming that position in October of 2010.

Also injured in the same incident today was Investigator Dave McCarley. McCarley was shot in the hand and leg. His wounds are serious with surgery and extensive rehab most likely to be needed. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Investigator Shaun Terwilliger received injuries to his forearm, not fire arm related, and was treated and released.

No words can express our feeling of loss at this time. Mike was a beacon of sunshine. Nothing but kind words for all. Seldom did a smile leave his face and his smiles were never bigger than when he would speak of his wife and daughter. We loved him as much he loved them.

One of the bad parts about our business is the fact that it must go on. The thin blue line cannot be allowed to be broken. Now we face that task without our brother Mike by our side. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers. A good man was lost today. We’ll keep you posted on the arrangements, which are incomplete as of this time. Mike’s picture is attached. Note the Chargers logo. Thank you for thinking about us. ..Source.. by Fox40.com

Sex offender: Woman 'had to die'

Posted in Related Deaths
4-3-2012 California:

A self-described Satanist who drove his dead girlfriend to the Lake Elsinore sheriff's station last week admitted in a jailhouse interview Monday to strangling the woman.

Jason Richard Budrow, 30, a registered sex offender who lives in the unincorporated Good Hope area near Lake Elsinore, said he feared the 48-year-old woman was a police informant.

"She had to die," Budrow said.

Budrow is jailed on suspicion of murder at the Southwest Detention Center in French Valley.

Resting his heavily tattooed arms on the counter in front of him and gazing through the glass divider into the visitors' room, Budrow spoke calmly as he described how he killed the woman.

She came over to his trailer behind a liquor store off Highway 74, he said. The woman, with whom he said he had a sexual relationship, got scared after realizing that he had "discovered her." She was on her way to her car when he strangled her about 2 or 3 a.m. Friday, Budrow said.

"I desecrated her body," he said, declining to elaborate.

Budrow said he shoved her body into the trunk of her white Chrysler Sebring convertible, then napped until his "curfew" -- an apparent reference to a parole requirement -- expired at 5 a.m.

Budrow said he drove away in the Sebring and at some point cut off the GPS-monitoring ankle bracelet that he must wear as a registered sex offender on parole.

"I murdered her while I was wearing that bracelet,
" he said.

Budrow declined to say what else he did in the hours before he arrived at the sheriff's station. If he had access to a gun, he said, he would have killed several other people. He did not explain why.

After pulling into the station parking lot and flagging someone down about 7:25 a.m., Budrow said he knelt on the pavement and put his hands in the air.

"I told them I had a body in my trunk," he said.

At first, he said, sheriff's officials were incredulous and asked if he was "playing games." He said they thought the trunk might have been booby trapped.

Budrow said he believed undercover law enforcement officers had been watching his every move and that he turned himself in because he was convinced they would eventually catch him.

The woman, Budrow said, knew he was involved in drug dealing and pimping and he thought she was going to reveal the names of "important people."

Sheriff's officials have said Budrow showed up at the sheriff's station and told a sergeant there was a body in the trunk. They declined to comment Monday on Budrow's statements.

Coroner's officials have not released the woman's name. Sheriff's officials said only that she was dating Budrow.

Capt. Dave Fontneau said that, so far, there is no indication the woman was sexually assaulted. He declined to say how she was killed.

Fontneau said an autopsy is scheduled for today.

'666'

Budrow said he has worked various jobs, including a stint selling time shares by phone. Riverside County court records show he served in the Army years ago but was discharged after testing positive for drugs.

The numbers "666" are tattooed above his right brow because he is a "Satanist," he said. At one point, Budrow lifted up his orange jail shirt to display a scar on his chest that he said was from ritual bloodletting.

While he hopes to spend the rest of his life leading an "Ozzie and Harriet" existence in a prison cell, Budrow said he's sure that he will be sentenced to death.

Budrow said he doesn't fear execution. He doesn't believe in an afterlife.

Though Budrow is on parole and a registered sex offender, his name, photo and other information did not appear Friday on the Megan's Law online database of registered sex offenders. By Monday, after sheriff's officials pointed out the omission, an entry was added. State Department of Justice officials could not explain Monday why Budrow was not listed.

Until Friday, sheriff's officials said Budrow had complied with his registration requirements. He had been checking in at the Lake Elsinore station since June 2006.

Budrow said he had been sent back to prison for parole violations, including a "rampage" at a halfway house. Terry Thornton, a Department of Corrections spokeswoman, declined to release details, saying the department gave the information to the Sheriff's Department. It was up to them to decide whether to disclose it, she said. Fontneau declined to do so on Monday.

Riverside County court records show Budrow pleaded guilty in 2004 to sexual penetration by force and was sentenced to three years in prison.

A probation officer's report says Budrow was staying with his grandparents in 2003 at a property they managed in Lakeland Village, near Lake Elsinore. He slipped into the bedroom of a 14-year-old neighbor one night and performed sex acts on the girl, court records say. The girl said she told him to stop but did not yell or resist out of fear for her safety, the report says.

Budrow told authorities he had been intoxicated from beer and marijuana, that he thought the girl was 17 and the encounter was consensual.

"He said if he did not confess, he could not live with himself, or run from the truth," the report says.

The probation officer wrote that Budrow would have been suitable for probation had he been eligible. He had no prior convictions and "demonstrated what appeared to be sincere remorse for his offense," the report says.

At the property where the sex assault occurred, his uncle, Eric Sisneros, said Monday he hasn't seen much of Budrow since his nephew got out of prison. Still, he couldn't believe he was capable of murder.

"He was always a gentle, kind person," Sisneros said. "Timid." ..Source.. by SARAH BURGE | The Press-Enterprise
