Shawn Phillips Is Accused Of Killing Mark Gabler
SAN ANTONIO -- San Antonio police said a man accused of killing another man in retaliation for an alleged sexual assault of one of his family members while they were all living together was arrested over the weekend.
Police said 32-year-old Shawn Phillips is charged with murder in connection with the killing of 33-year-old Mark Gabler.
According to the arrest affidavit, Phillips was upset over an alleged sexual assault and told a woman that was "going to take care of it his way."
"Obviously, we don't want people to take matters into their own hands," said Linda Tomasini, a spokesperson with the Bexar County Sheriffs Office. "That's why we have law enforcement here."
Gabler's badly decomposed body was found on May 20 in a hayfield off of the 13400 block of Donop Road in Southeast Bexar County, the affidavit states.
According to the affidavit, investigators tracked down Phillips after he used Gabler's credit card to make a purchase on the Internet, leaving his e-mail address behind.
"The investigation concluded that he was using Gabler's social security card," said Tomasini.
Tomasini said on Monday that investigators do not believe Phillips acted alone. She said they are also looking at three other suspects. Kenneth Nelson is awaiting extradition from the state of Alabama. Michael Sorrell and Richelle Vasquez are still at large.

Kenneth Nelson Charged In Connection With Death Of Mark Gabler
SAN ANTONIO -- San Antonio police said a man accused of helping kill another man in retaliation for an alleged sexual assault of a friend's family member has been formally charged.
Police said Kenneth Nelson, 40, is charged with murder in connection with the killing of 33-year-old Mark Gabler.
According to the arrest affidavit, Shawn Phillips, a friend of Nelson's, was upset over an alleged sexual assault and told a woman that he was "going to take care of it his way."
A Sheriff's Office spokeswoman said that investigators did not believe Phillips acted alone. She said they are also looking at three other suspects, including Nelson, who is awaiting extradition from the state of Alabama.
According to the affidavit, the juvenile victim told investigators she saw Phillips and Nelson almost kill Gabler because of what he did to her. The victim told investigators Nelson put on his "killing gloves" and that Nelson and Phillips took Gabler on a ride.

Vigilante justice gone too far? New suspect jailed in murder case
12-27-2010 Texas:
SAN ANTONIO -- He was brutally attacked and left for dead in a southeast Bexar County field. Now, a new arrest in this case brings the total to three people behind bars charged with murder.
Could the late April killing of Mark Gabler be a case of vigilante justice gone too far? The suspects reportedly took justice into their own hands after Gabler allegedly molested a seven year old girl.
Richelle Vasquez is now behind bars on murder and theft charges in connection with the April 26 murder. The 31-year-old joins Shawn Phillips and Kenneth Nelsen behind bars for the same crime.
According to an arrest warrant, Vasquez lured the victim into the truck that drove him to his last moments. Bexar County investigators say the group wanted revenge on Gabler for sexually assaulting a young girl who is a relative of one of the suspects.
The man's badly decomposed and headless body was found in the 13700 of Donop Road on May 20 after being beaten and stabbed deputies said. His detached skull was not found until the next day said investigators.
How did they get a break in this case? According to investigators, the 33-year-old victim was getting social security benefits. Some of the suspects were reportedly using the debit/credit card with his money on it at local stores -- which helped investigators in this case because he was already dead. Plus, the case of child sex assault against the victim already existed assisted in focusing in on suspects.
Detectives say three of the suspects confessed to the crime. Phillips and Nelsen were arrested earlier this month.
One remaining suspect has not been captured. According to the warrant, Michael Sorrell is the only person denying connection to the killing. The arrest warrant said all the other suspects say he participated. ..Source.. by Marvin Hurst / KENS 5
Vigilante Justice Ends with Murder of Alleged Sex Offender, Say Cops
12-30-2010 Texas:
SAN ANTONIO, Texas (CBS/KENS) An alleged pedophile is in the morgue and three people are in a Texas jail charged with his murder after police say they took the law into their own hands.
Mark Gabler's badly decomposed body was found in May in a field on the outskirts of San Antonio. Investigators say he was beaten and stabbed before being left to die, probably as early as April.
San Antonio Police investigators now believe Gabler's death was the result of vigilante justice carried out because Shawn Phillips and three other suspects believed Gabler had molested Phillips' 7-year-old female relative, according to CBS affiliate KENS.
Phillips was arrested in November after investigators say they discovered that he had used Gabler's credit card weeks after Gabler's death. According to the arrest affidavit, Phillips confessed to beating Gabler to death with a club, the station reported.
Phillips also named three others who he said helped him "take care of it his way," as his wife later told police Phillips put it, including a woman who she says "lured" Gabler into the truck that drove him to his death, according to The San Antonio Express-News.
Richelle Vasquez was arrested Monday and charged with murder for her role in the killing. Kenneth Nelsen was arrested in Alabama shortly after Phillips.
Detectives say the three suspects in custody confessed to the crime. According to the warrant, Michael Sorrell, named by the others as having participated in the crime, has also been charged with the murder but is still at large, the paper reported. ..Source.. by CBS affiliate KENS.
