A mother's love for a lost son — the sex offender found dead Saturday

There is something odd about this case, maybe at a future date something will show up. Who killed who? A suicide pact? Also possible is, all were killed b/c Green was a RSO by a vigilante? Whatever the facts really are, a RSO died/was killed, hence inclusion for the other deaths here.

11-10-2014 Missouri:

On Nov. 10, 1992, Lewis Green, then 22, shot himself in the head during a game of Russian Roulette.

That left him partially paralyzed on his left side and with mental problems, his mother said.

Twenty-two years and five days later — on Saturday — Green, 44, was one of three people shot to death at a north side Springfield hotel that often is home to transients, as well as families down on their luck.

"I loved my son," said Green's mother, Kaye Green, Tuesday before she went to start making funeral arrangements. "I loved my son in spite of himself."

Green was living in room 149 of the Economy Inn where he was required to have his address posted online because he was a registered sex offender. Also killed in the same room were Danielle J. Keyes, 29, and Trevor L. Fantroy, 43. One man survived, Christopher K. Freeman, 24. No arrests have been made.

Kaye Green, 63, a former machine operator who retired from Solo Cup after 24 years, said her son moved to the Economy Inn about five months ago. She said he could afford the payments on his checks from Social Security disability and the motel didn't do background checks on who lived there.

Rape charge may have triggered domestic homicide

4-22-2014 Indiana:

GRIFFITH | Police continue to look for what triggered a murder-suicide Monday outside St. Mary's School where a Gary man killed his estranged wife

He later turned the gun on himself when confronted by police outside his garage.

"We are still trying to find the specific cause of the event," Griffith Police Chief Greg Mance said. "At this time, everything still points toward a domestic situation that turned violent."

The violence took place 10 days before the killer, Remanard Castro, would face a judge and the possibility of a 20- to 50-year sentence on charges he had raped his victim, Nina Castro, in November.

Laura Berry, executive director of the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence in Indianapolis, suggested Tuesday the upcoming court hearing may have been the trigger.

She said if the rape took place last fall and the charges were only recently filed, Remanard may have deluded himself "into thinking he got away with it, and once he knew he had an initial hearing coming up, all of a sudden he is facing incarceration."

Two men sentenced to prison for 2013 murder

6-22-2015 New York:

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Two Albany men will spend at least 25 years in prison for a brutal 2013 murder.

Authorities said it was a revenge killing. The killers thought they were taking down a rapist but instead killed an innocent man.

Sylvester “Soup” Scott was shot and killed on Grand Street in December 2013 just days before Christmas. Russel Palmer and his nephew Kareem Murray were found guilty of the crime.

In court on Monday, Scott’s family members said Scott was a good guy and a dedicated father whose mission in life was to help out kids as a mentor and basketball coach. So it came as a huge shock to those who knew him that he was shot dead.

Albany police said Palmer and Murray believed Scott had raped Murray’s girlfriend, and they planned to hunt him down. But prosecutors said Palmer and his nephew got it wrong when they pegged Scott as the rapist.

7-24-2013 South Carolina:

JONESVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) - Union County Sheriff David Taylor said two arrests were made in a double-homicide case after two people were found dead inside a Jonesville home Monday.

Taylor said a neighbor called 911 at about 8:40 p.m. and wanted deputies to check on the residents in a home on Furman L. Fendley Highway.

He identified the victims as Gretchen Parker, 51, and Charles Parker, 59, and said they lived in the home where they were found dead.

Taylor said surveillance video helped them identify and arrest Christine, 36, and Jeremy Moody, 30, in connection with the Parkers' deaths. Both were arrested and charged with two counts of murder.

Jeremy Moody told deputies he killed Charles Parker because he was a registered sex offender and planned to kill another registered sex offender on his list on Wednesday had he not been caught, Taylor said. Taylor said Gretchen Parker was killed because she was with Charles Parker.

According to the State Law Enforcement Division website, Charles Parker is listed as a registered sex offender, convicted in 1991 of criminal sexual conduct third degree.

Deputies, neighbor discover bodies in Jonesville home

Taylor said a neighbor had stopped by a few times Monday, but no one came to the door so he called deputies, Taylor said.

Taylor said in a press conference on Tuesday that both victims were shot and also stabbed multiple times but so far, investigators have no leads and have not made any arrests in the case.

"Anytime you have dead bodies, and you don't know who's done the act, it's a threat," Taylor said.

An autopsy done on Monday morning determined that Charles Parker was shot twice, once in the neck and once in the chest, and also suffered from stab wounds, Taylor said. Gretchen Parker was shot once in the chest and stabbed multiple times, according to Taylor.

When deputies arrived, they found the back door open and heard dogs inside the home, Taylor said. He said deputies discovered the bodies of a man and woman in the living room, guarded by several dogs.

Taylor said investigators had to wait for Animal Control to take eight dogs, some puppies, two cats and chickens out of the house and secure warrants before going inside.

State Law Enforcement Division investigators were brought in to help process the crime scene, Taylor said.

Taylor said from everyone investigators have talked to, no one had talked to the Parkers since Saturday. He also said there were no signs of forced entry, though the door was left wide open.

"From everything that we can tell, nothing is missing at this time," Taylor said. "Everything appears to still be intact. The house was not ransacked. So it doesn't appear to be robbery."
Sheriff: Surveillance video shows suspects at scene of crime

According to Taylor, Jeremy Moody said he wanted to kill Charles Parker a year ago but he "chickened out" and then decided to kill him on Sunday. Taylor said Jeremy Moody got the tools necessary to go through with his plans, including a gun, knife, gloves and boots.

Taylor said the Parkers' exterior surveillance cameras showed the Moodys pull up to the home, pop the hood on their vehicle as if it was broken down then encounter Gretchen Parker.

Update: 2 arrested in slayings of missing men

12-18-2009 Alabama:

GADSDEN, AL (WAFF) – Etowah County Sheriff's Department will hold a press conference Thursday morning to discuss information on the human remains found believed to be those of two missing men and the Attalla couple arrested in connection with the slayings.

Investigators said Robert Wayne Kelley, 35, has been charged with two counts of capital murder in the deaths of James Bachelor, 38, and Rocky Morgan, 55. His estranged wife, Margie Morgan Kelley, 35, was charged with first-degree hindering a criminal investigation.

Etowah County officials did not disclose a motive in the deaths, but said that the Kelley's knew the two men.

According to the Etowah County Sheriff's Department, the bodies thought to be those of Bachelor and Morgan were found near Center Road in Attalla. That location was pinpointed by evidence recovered during their investigation, authorities said.

Bachelor and Morgan had not been seen for a week. Both men were last seen heading to Marshall County for a fishing trip.

"After they have been missing for several days, a family member came concerned and brought it to the attention of the sheriff's office," said Etowah County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Natalie Barton.

Investigators said the location where the remains were found is believed to be a random disposal site for the bodies.

Bachelor was a registered sex offender, but investigators said the deaths don't appear to be related to his sex offender status.

"It was pertinent information, we first believed, when they were just missing, but we don't believe it has anything to do with them being deceased," Barton said.

Investigators with Alabama's Department of Forensic Science will examine the pieces of remains to try to conclusively identify the bodies. ..Source..

Burned bodies double murder in Etowah County: Cadaver dogs to help search

12-18-2009 Alabama:

ETOWAH COUNTY, Ala. -- Cadaver dogs are expected to help search a field where burned remains of two men have been found south of Attalla in Etowah County, investigators tell the Gadsden Times.

The biggest piece of bone found so far is about 4 inches, Sheriff Todd Entrekin said in a news conference Thursday. The burned remains are believed to be those of Rocky Morgan, 55, and his nephew, James Bachelor, 38, Entrekin said.

Morgan's daughter, Margie Morgan Kelley, 35, is charged with hindering prosecution, and her husband, Robert Wayne Kelley, 35, is charged with 2 counts of capital murder, Etowah County District Attorney Jimmie Harp told the Gadsden Times.

Robert Wayne Kelley was arrested by sheriff's investigators late Wednesday at a local hospital after he went there earlier in the week.

The men were reported missing on Dec. 11 and were last seen on Dec. 2 where they lived at Rocky Morgan's home on Rocky Hollow Road, Entrekin said.

It is believed the men were shot and killed at the Rocky Hollow Road home, left there for several days, then taken in a van during a period of a few days about three miles to the field on Center Road, just off U.S. Highway 11, Entrekin said.

4-12-2012 New Hampshire:

DALTON -- Two men are dead and a third was hospitalized following what law enforcement officials are calling an apparent shooting incident. The incident occurred yesterday at the residence of Wayne Ainsworth at 643 Whitefield Road in Dalton.

A joint press release issued early yesterday evening by N.H. Attorney General Michael A. Delaney, State Police Colonel Robert Quinn, Dalton Police Chief Mario Audit, and Whitefield Police Chief William Colborn said all three men, whose identities have not yet been released, had apparent gunshot wounds. The identities of the men were withheld last night pending notification of family members. Police said autopsies for the two deceased men will be scheduled.

Ainsworth made headlines in January 2010, when he was married to Joseph Besk, an inmate at the Northern NH Correctional Facility in a prison ceremony. At the time Besk was serving a 10-20 year sentence on felonious sexual assault charges. The two men met in prison while Ainsworth was also serving a 10-year sentence, the last five of which was spent in the same cell as Besk. The marriage was believed to be the first same sex marriage in the NH Correctional System.

It is unclear whether Ainsworth or Besk were involved in the Thursday afternoon incident. According to the NH sex offender online registry, both men resided at the Whitefield Road address.

Police said the investigation is still ongoing but there is no reason to believe the public is in danger. ..Source.. by Melissa Grima

2 men killed at registered NH sex offenders' home

DALTON, N.H.—Two men were shot to death Thursday at a northern New Hampshire home listed on the state's sex offender registry. A third man was injured in the shooting.

Wayne Ainsworth, who lived in the home, was injured and was in stable condition at a hospital, said his sister, Shari Souliere, who was briefed by police. She didn't know who else may have been living in the home, and she wasn't provided with details about what may have transpired, she said.

Investigators didn't release the victims' names or other details about the investigation. But the attorney general's office said there was no threat to the public.

The state's sex offender registry lists two offenders at the address, 54-year-old Ainsworth and 48-year-old Joseph Besk. Both were convicted of aggravated felonious sexual assault. A story by The Berlin Daily Sun says the two married in 2010, while Besk was finishing his prison sentence.

11-8-2012 North Carolina:

Clyde and Ida Valentine were found lying in the bed of a back bedroom of her northern Charlotte home last week, dead from gunshot wounds to the head, according to a search warrant obtained by the Observer on Thursday.

Still, police have not said who they believe is responsible for the deaths. Clyde Valentine had tape over his mouth. Police say the case is classified as a death investigation and spokeswoman Officer Jessica Lawrence said investigators were not looking for a suspect.

Authorities said a man called police on Nov. 1 and said he’d found his parents’ bodies in the home on Swift Arrow Lane. The search warrant identified that man as Malcolm Valentine, who came to his the house after his girlfriend said she couldn’t get anyone to come to the door.

Records show the Valentines had divorced in 2004, and Clyde Valentine had remarried three years ago.

Officers at the scene told reporters they believe the deaths were domestic-related. But they would not comment about whether the deaths were related to child sex charges filed against Clyde Valentine earlier this year.

Clyde Valentine was arrested in June on three felony counts of taking indecent liberties with a child. In September, he was charged with one count of statutory rape. He was expected to appear in court Nov. 13 on the charges.

Detectives said during the summer that the charges against Clyde Valentine involved a relative, and not a student at Phillip O. Berry Academy where he once taught electronics. ..Source.. by Cleve R. Wootson Jr.

A source confirmed to Eyewitness News that Clyde Valentine had a domestic violence protection order against a family member who was not his wife Ida.

Slain Texas teen Shania Gray had sexual assault charges pending against murder suspect

9-10-2012 Texas:

A Texas man has been charged with murdering a 16-year-old girl who police believe was killed to keep her from testifying at the man's sexual assault trial for raping her.

Police in the Dallas suburb of Carrollton say Franklin B. Davis, 30, of Irving, was charged with capital murder Sunday after confessing to the death of Shania Gray. Gray was last seen alive Thursday afternoon at Hebron High School in Carrollton. Her body was found Saturday in a secluded area near the Trinity River.

Carrollton police spokesman Jon Stovall told The Associated Press in an email that police believe Davis killed Gray because she was about to testify against him.

A spokeswoman for Gray's family, Sherry Ramsey, told The Dallas Morning News that Gray met Davis when she babysat his two children. Ramsey said that later, afer the teen declined many requests to babysit, Gray told her grandmother that Davis had raped her.

The crime was reported to Mesquite police, and Davis was charged with four counts of sexual assault of a child.

Ramsey said Davis had warned Gray he would kill her if she told anyone about the assault.

According to an arrest warrant, Davis contacted Gray through social media and pretended to be someone else in an attempt to get information about the sexual assault case. Davis then used a pre-paid cellphone to set up a meeting with Gray at her high school on Thursday.

Davis told WFAA-TV in a jailhouse interview that he tracked Gray down because he wanted to prove his innocence in the sexual assault case.

"I needed to get some kind of evidence, some kind of proof myself to show I did not have sex with her and that she's lying," Davis told the television station.

Davis told authorities that Gray was surprised to see him but got into his car when he told her he wanted to talk to her about the sexual assault case.

Cops: Slain teen was to testify against man found dead with her

10-29-2010 Michigan:

He had been charged with sexual assault against her

Taylor Manley was found in a minivan with Raymond Bush, 38. The teen was supposed to testify against him Wednesday morning in trial for allegedly sexually assaulting her, but she disappeared before that happened, police and prosecutors say.

Bush died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office said.

Taylor's father told the Free Press earlier he believes his daughter wouldn’t have committed suicide. She was afraid of Bush, he said.

Robert Manley said Bush had threatened her against testifying.

The bodies of the two were found in Bush’s minivan parked in St. Charles Cemetery, on North Dixie Highway in Newport, according to State Police.

Autopsies are scheduled for today by the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The 15-year-old moved in with her father two weeks ago because of the ongoing sexual assault case, Robert Manley said. He said it was time for her to be a kid again and added he was “trying to take her away, trying to hide her, so this kind of thing wouldn’t happen.”

He said he doesn’t think his daughter left willingly with the 38-year-old and said she didn’t seem to have a problem with testifying against Bush, who police said had a tattoo on the back of his neck with Taylor’s name.

Robert Manley came home Wednesday around 7:30 a.m. after working an overnight shift and said he knew something was wrong because his daughter wasn’t there. She was scheduled to testify at 10:30 a.m and wasn’t supposed to go to school for that reason, he said.

Clare County Prosecutor Michelle Ambrozaitis said Bush never showed in 80th District Court in Harrison on Wednesday to face a charge of third-degree criminal sexual conduct charge from Aug. 22 for an alleged sexual relationship with Taylor.

Because of fears he might stop her from attending that hearing, an Amber Alert was issued Wednesday when she went missing, Michigan State Police Sgt. Joe Cairnduff said

Missing Cleveland Mother Latasha Jackson, 13 MO Chaniya Wynn Killed by Thomas Lorde in Double Murder-Suicide

Surveillance Captures Last Images of Mother, Daughter

2-19-2012 Ohio:

CLEVELAND — An Amber Alert ends in tragedy as a Cleveland woman, her one-year-old daughter and their suspected kidnapper are found dead, in what investigators believe was a double murder-suicide.

The bodies of 19-year-old Latasha Jackson, her daughter Chaniya Wynn and their alleged killer, 35-year-old Thomas Lorde, were discovered in the garage of a vacant property in the 7000 block of Union Avenue, just before 3:00 a.m. Sunday.

Fox 8 News has obtained the last known images of the victims, captured just moments before the kidnapping unfolded.

Surveillance cameras were rolling outside a carry-out on Saturday morning, as Latasha Jackson pushed a stroller with little Chaniya inside. Joining them on the trip to the store was Latasha’s 14-year-old brother, David Thomas.

Little did they know that a short time after the video was captured, Latasha and Chaniya would be abducted at gunpoint, by Latasha’s boyfriend, Thomas Lorde, a convicted sexual predator who had threatened to kill her baby after the child’s father allegedly smashed Lorde’s windshield with a brick.

David Thomas told Fox 8, “I really didn’t think he would actually do that, though. I didn’t actually think he would end up killing my one-year-old niece and my sister. I didn’t think he had it in him.”

According to employees at the carry-out, Latasha Jackson showed no signs that she felt impending danger or was afraid of Thomas Lorde, a man she had dated for a couple of months after a chance meeting at a bus stop.

“She was laughing. She was smiling, and she left, and she said, ‘Bye,’ you know,” said clerk Mike Mansour.

But the victim’s brother said when they left the store, Thomas Lorde was waiting for them.

“He walked up. He was like, ‘Check this out.’ He pulled out a gun and pointed it at me, and told me to go on, and I was there looking around, and that’s when he grabbed the stroller from my sister, told my sister to walk, and he called her a ‘B,’ said David Thomas. “And that’s when I walked up the street, and I went back to the house and called the police.”

That phone call set off an Amber Alert across Greater Cleveland, and prompted the FBI and Cleveland police to offer a $10,000 reward for information on the whereabouts of the two victims. Then came the discovery of the bodies of Latasha Jackson, her beloved Chaniya and Thomas Lorde, in the garage of the vacant property, a short distance from the carry-out.

Investigators said it appeared Lorde killed Chaniya and Latasha, and then himself.

“I believe my sister; she was a fighter. She wasn’t going to let it happen,” said David Thomas. “I believe she tried to fight, and that’s how she ended up dying.”

Those who knew Latasha Jackson and little Chaniya are stunned by the level of Thomas Lorde’s brutality, in what they believe was his quest for control and revenge.

Jean Bullock, who is Latasha’s aunt and Chaniya’s great-aunt, told Fox 8, “He’s cold, and he’s heartless, and everyone knew that.”

“It’s so sad this happen because nobody think it would happen like that,” added Mike Mansour. “He killed the baby; for what? You know?”

In a strange twist, the garage where the bodies were found on Sunday, is just a couple of blocks away from a field on East 71th Street, where the body of 11-year-old kidnapping victim Shakira Johnson was found in 2003. Her murder remains an open investigation. ..Source.. by Jack Shea,

Man shoots, kills girlfriend at Duke health clinic

5-6-2010 North Carolina:

DURHAM (WTVD) -- A Duke Medicine employee was shot and killed by a gunman who came to her workplace in Durham Tuesday afternoon.

The shooting at the Duke Health Center at North Duke Street happened just before 3 p.m. at the corner of N. Duke Street and Frasier Street. That's north of I-85 near the Durham Regional Hospital.

Panicked 911 calls immediately began flooding into emergency operators.

"We're all hiding in a room here," a doctor told a 911 operator.

Click here to listen to the calls

"The guy with the gun came in and somebody fell through the door," said another caller. "A man came in behind her and shot."

Witnesses reported hearing four shots. They said medical staff were attempting to give the woman CPR, but she was unconscious.

Durham police identified the victim as 49-year-old Charlene Bullock King. Relatives told ABC11 that she worked at the center for 27 years as a phlebotomist. They said the gunman was her ex-boyfriend.

Police identified him as 52-year-old Burnette Taylor of Durham.

"Charlene was very sweet, very sweet," King's stepson Steven Shealey said. "She didn't deserve this at all. Even at one point when I was going through some things with my fiancé, she took me in."

He said she had recently had a fight with Taylor and decided to leave the relationship.

"I guess he realized he had lost something that was a jewel, something that was precious as she was, and that's why he couldn't let go," Shealey said.

After the shooting, Durham police quickly swarmed the area trying to find Taylor who took off on foot.

"We happened to have officers training not too far from here at that point in time, so they were able to respond at a very quick rate," Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez said.

Witnesses reported the gunman ran into a wooded area behind a house on Carver Street. They reported hearing multiple gunshots before Taylor was seen lying on the ground.

As police tracked Taylor, Lopez said he "engaged police officers in a gun battle" at Carver and Broad streets.

Taylor was shot by officers and Lopez said he was taken to Duke Hospital where he later died.

Lopez said the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation would be assisting in the case - as is standard in any officer involved shooting.

Taylor had a long criminal record. According to the North Carolina Department of Corrections, he was a registered sex offender after convictions for second-degree rape and kidnapping in 1993. He also has convictions for car theft, larceny of firearms, resisting arrest, and drunk driving.

After serving time for those crimes, he was released and apparently began dating another woman, who late-last year accused him of assault. The woman even requested a temporary restraining order, describing a violent episode in which Taylor beat her unconscious. In court documents she wrote, "He continued to slap, kick, punch me with his fists. Blackening both my eyes, fracturing my ribs, my liver was cut due to a kick."

Probation officers put out warrants for Taylor's arrest beginning in November of last year.

State correction officials say Taylor's probation officer made every attempt to locate him, but officers never managed to track Taylor down, until six months later when Durham police officers shot him Tuesday.

Officials with the North Carolina Department of Correction also say their revue shows the probation officer made numerous attempts to find Taylor over the last six months, at his last known address and his family members, but Taylor was willfully fleeing supervision.

Meanwhile, Duke Medicine reopened on Thursday after it cancelled all appointments for all services at the Duke Health Center at North Duke Street for Wednesday. ..Source.. by WTVD.com

Tift County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Bobby Brannen confirmed earlier Monday that three people were dead at the residence, located off U.S. Highway 319 South near Omega.

Tift County’s 911 center received a call shortly before 6:30 a.m. about a person being shot, Brannen said.

A fourth person was transported by air for emergency medical treatment.

Brannen did not release any additional information, and the other fatalities have not been identified. It is believed, but not confirmed, that two of the dead are related to the woman who was air lifted, possibly mother and father.

Ward had moved back and forth between Colquitt and Tift counties since his release in April 2007 after he served nearly 10 years at Autry State Prison in Pelham, authorities said. He pleaded guilty Oct. 31, 1997, to the rape of a Lowndes County woman and began serving his sentence in state prison in December of that year.

On Jan. 15, Ward changed his sex-offender registration to Colquitt County from Tift County, after having moved from here to Tift County in 2010.

In a plea arrangement on the rape charge in Lowndes County, counts of false imprisonment, aggravated stalking and burglary were dismissed at the time he pleaded to the rape charge, District Attorney David Miller said.

The Georgia State Patrol charged Ward in July 2010 in Colquitt County with driving under the influence, failure to maintain lane, failure to provide assistance and driving without a license on his person. It was not immediately known whether those charges had been disposed of. ..Source.. by Alan Mauldin

GBI: Ward was shooter in murder-suicide

3-27-2012:

TIFTON — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation Sylvester Office and the Tift County Sheriff’s Office began a joint investigation at 7:30 a.m. Monday into a murder/suicide that occurred in Tift County, the GBI reported.

Kim Baker, special agent in charge, provided a press release Tuesday stating that two adults discovered deceased inside the residence located at 103 Iniss Road in Tifton have been identified as James Williams Peters Sr., approximately 57 years of age, and Shirley Ann Peters, approximately 53 years of age. Both had sustained what appeared to be gunshot wounds.

A third person also found deceased at the residence was identified as Darrell Dewayne Ward, approximately 43 years of age, who had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest.

So far, the crime scene examination and interviews conducted by the GBI and the Tift County authorities indicate that sometime after 10 p.m. Sunday, Ward drove to the Peters’ residence, armed with a handgun, and mortally wounded James and Shirley Peters, shot their daughter and then fatally shot himself. The daughter is expected to recover from the injuries that she sustained during the attack.

The bodies of the deceased are being transported to the GBI Crime Lab for autopsies.

The investigation by the GBI, TCSO and the Tift County Coroner’s Office continues.

IN- Elkhart police find bodies of two men inside car

1-20-2009 Indiana:

Authorities say one of the victims could be missing Elkhart man.

ELKHART — A daylong search Thursday for a missing Elkhart man led police to a black car west of downtown, where the bodies of two men were found inside, police said.

The discovery was made about 2:30 p.m. in the 1300 block of Leonard Street, not long after homicide detectives searched the Elkhart County landfill after receiving tips from "multiple people" the missing man was there, police said.

Police had not identified the men as of Thursday night, but they believe one of the victims is 30-year-old Kevin K. Pendleton, who was reported missing earlier Thursday.

A cause of death has not been determined, but police said they believe the deaths are related to a shooting involving Pendleton that occurred about 1 a.m. Thursday in the 300 block of Chapman Avenue.

Pendleton was last seen leaving his apartment in the 300 block of Chapman at that time to talk to two unknown men in a black vehicle.

Pendleton's 28-year-old girlfriend told police that when Pendleton was in the car, she heard gunshots and saw bright flashes. The vehicle then left the area with Pendleton inside, she told police.

Officers were able to find additional witnesses who also verified they heard shots and observed flashes inside the car, police said.

The Elkhart Police Department Homicide Unit searched all day for the man, fearing he may have been killed and dumped somewhere, according to authorities. That led them to the landfill on County Road 7, where they came up empty.

Lt. Ed Windbigler, Elkhart police spokesman, said Thursday afternoon the car found on Leonard appears to match the description of the car Pendleton got into early that morning.

No arrests had been made as of Thursday night, although police said they are searching for a "person of interest" in the shooting/missing person case, 28-year-old Shawn C. Palmer of Elkhart.

Palmer — who police describe as armed and dangerous — has black hair, brown eyes, is 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 170 pounds.

Also of note, police said, is that Palmer owns a 2002 black four-door Chevrolet Malibu, which might match the description of the car recovered on Leonard. That car was towed for processing, police said. The Malibu has an Indiana license plate number of LO6853.

Pendleton's girlfriend told police Pendleton knew both men that he got in the car with, but she only knew their street names.

Pendleton has a criminal record, according to court records, and was charged last month for failure to register as a sex offender. His next court date is Feb. 24. ..Source.. by TOM MOOR, Tribune Staff Writer

UPDATE: Elkhart deaths ruled homicides

1-16-2009 Indiana:

ELKHART — The deaths of two men found in a car west of downtown Thursday afternoon have been ruled homicides, officials said.

Kevin K. Pendleton, 30, and John J. Williams, 26, both of Elkhart, were discovered about 2:30 p.m. in the 1300 block of Leonard Street.

Police said Friday that Pendleton died from a gunshot wound, but would not say how many times or where he had been shot. Williams also died from a gunshot wound, Elkhart County Deputy Coroner Jeff Landrum said.

Authorities, meanwhile, are still looking for 28-year-old Shawn C. Palmer of Elkhart, who they describe as a "person of interest" in the case. Palmer, police said, should be considered armed and dangerous.

Police say Palmer might have been in the car with Pendleton and Williams when they were killed. He is not a suspect at this time. ..Source..

Shootout kills three

8-28-2010 Georgia:

DALTON, Ga. — What started as a 4-year-old girl’s birthday celebration Thursday ended with little children cowering in an attic for safety as family members died below in a hail of gunfire.

The girl’s mother, Mindy Bullard, 35, was shot twice while begging for mercy and fleeing across the family’s roof. On the ground, her ankles broken, she dragged herself toward a neighbor’s yard.

She survived, and her injuries are not life-threatening, authorities said, but three men died in the exchange of gunfire, including the alleged perpetrator, David Hartline, a 41-year-old convicted child molester from Summerville, Ga., who deputies believe was drunk and full of jealousy.

Bullard’s father, Edward H. Manz III, 61, of Chattanooga, and her ex-husband, Kenneth Simonson, 41, of Cleveland, Tenn., also were killed but not before Manz fired at least two deadly rounds at Hartline.

Bullard had been trying to end a tumultuous six-month relationship with Hartline when she told him not to attend the family birthday party Thursday afternoon.

He showed up anyway. Shunned a second time, he grabbed a gun, and started on a deadly attack
, Whitfield County Sheriff Scott Chitwood said.

Bullard, a mother of seven children ranging in age from 4 to 16, begged for Hartline’s mercy moments after hoisting her children to safety in the home’s attic, 911 calls indicate.

“His name is David Hartline. He’s in my house, and he’s got a gun,” Bullard said, after telling a child to get into the attic. Hartline yells an explicative-filled rant with allegations that Bullard had been seeing another man. She denies everything and begs, “Please don’t hurt me, David.”

A voice that is apparently Hartline yells across the line “I’ll ... put this gun to your ... head and pull the trigger right now!”

Seconds later, gunfire echoes across the phone line and the call ends. Bullard was later wounded in the legs as she ran across her home’s roof, the sheriff said.

In other calls, witnesses plead for faster response. Deputies took a little more than 10 minutes to get to the scene, according to an incident report.

“People shot out here on Rainbow Circle, get the ambulances out here quick,” a male voice pleads. “Man is killing people out here, killing people!”

The line goes silent after the caller says, “Oh, here he comes.” And then there are four gunshots.

When Whitfield County sheriff’s deputies arrived at 1751 Rainbow Circle, they found Bullard on the ground behind the house, according to the sheriff’s department incident report.

SHELL-SHOCKED CHILDREN

Six children were in the home for the birthday party Thursday. A family member said it was rare for Bullard and Simonson to have all their children together at one time, but everyone had united for the birthday party.

Four children live in the rural north Whitfield County home and three live with Simonson. A 16-year-old girl did not attend the party. Bullard has children by both Simonson and another man, family and friends said.

Some of the children hid in the attic, but Margaret Manz, Bullard’s aunt and the sister-in-law of Edward Manz, said at least one of Simonson’s sons was found hiding in the woods two hours after the shooting.

“It’s just tragic,” Margaret Manz said. “Mindy feels awful. She’s in terrible pain, and she blames herself.”

Deputies ushered the children to Azalea Thompson’s home two doors down on Rainbow Circle as they sorted out the scene. She’s known the children for years, and had had them over to play her Nintendo Wii on several occasions.

“The kids were quite not themselves,” Thompson said Friday while standing on her porch in the heavily wooded neighborhood with big yards and large homes. “We hugged them, and my daughter made them popcorn and tea and they played the Wii.”

She said the children, who were later taken to stay with a relative, acted as though they were numb. Some knew family members had been shot. One or two of the children may have realized someone died, Thompson said.

FATHER’S COURAGE

Bullard has been complaining to family members for some time that Hartline was causing her trouble.

Her father “had told me that within the last couple months, she had gotten involved with someone who turned out to be a psycho and was making her life miserable,” Margaret Manz said.

Hartline served a seven-year prison sentence for child molestation and was released in 2007, state prison records show.

From her Summerville home, an aunt of David Hartline said the family was still absorbing the shock from the previous night. She said the Hartlines didn’t know Bullard’s family very well.

“It’s just a loss for everybody involved,” Judy Hartline said. “We’re feeling for our loss as well as the other family’s. It’s a tragic event. That’s our family’s comment at this time.”

Deputies theorize that despite being wounded himself in the exchange of gunfire, Manz managed to unload two shots into Hartline before dying himself.

Though Edward Manz, whom friends knew as “Buster,” had a sometimes strained relationship with his daughter, he was always there for her. The large home on four acres of land was owned by Manz, neighbors said, and he often performed odd jobs there.

“They had their ups and downs, Mindy and Buster, but when it comes down to it, blood is thicker than water, and he wasn’t going to let that guy kill his grandchildren,” Margaret Manz said. ..Source.. by Adam Crisp

Suspect killed was sex offender from Tennessee

A registry violation, a ministerial violation. I begin to wonder, if once an arrest seems to go awry, and they are ready for a SWAT Team, do they have any negotiator type person to at least try to end a situation without further violence. Unfortunately the articles do not have a timeline to know whether a negotiator could have ended it. The facts here are missing something, this is not the usual way this occurs. I know this, there is a little girl who will grow up fatherless, and one day will be asking WHY? Will police or lawmakers be able to answer her?
3-10-2011 Colorado:

LIMON, Colo. — The shooting death of a police officer on Colorado's eastern plains left his community grieving Thursday as state and local police investigated a standoff that also ended with a suspect dead inside a mobile home.

Limon officer Jay Sheridan, 27, was killed Wednesday by gunfire that erupted when police tried to serve a fugitive warrant to a man at a mobile home park in the town 70 miles east of Denver, Colorado State Trooper Heather Cobler said.

Sheridan had been a six-year veteran on the Limon police force, and his death marked the first time an officer had been killed in the line of duty in the community of about 1,800, said police chief Lynn Yowell.

"It's hit all of us very hard," Yowell said. "It's a loss that's cut deep within the community."

U.S. marshals identified the suspect as Dennis Mark Hasty, 52, who was wanted on a sex offender registry violation from Tennessee's Roane County.

Officers said they found Hasty's body after a four-hour standoff, and that he apparently shot himself.

In a statement, the U.S. Marshals Service said Thursday that authorities in Colorado's Lincoln County were notified late Wednesday that Hasty was believed to be in the area. The Tennessee Sexual Offender Registry listed Hasty as having a 1990 conviction for incest.

Tennessee officials could not immediately provide additional information.

Jim Hartwig, manager of the mobile home park, told The Denver Post the man had been living in a trailer with a woman since November. Hartwig said the man possessed a .25 caliber handgun and other guns.

Two other officers, who were not identified, were trapped in a separate room of the home during the standoff. Neither was hurt. As many as 20 mobile home park residents were evacuated during the standoff.

Chief Yowell said the department has five officers on its police force. Yowell told the Post that Sheridan was the father of a 1-year-old girl and he had just started a goat ranch.

Resident Josh Wiedemann said he heard "a pop and a whiz" and that when he went outside, a police officer with a shotgun told him to move away.

"The U.S. Marshals Service is deeply saddened at the tragic loss of Officer Jay Sheridan of the Limon Police Department," said Colorado U.S. Marshal John Kammerzell. "The Marshals Service stands together with our fellow law enforcement partners during this time of mourning." ..Source.. by ajc.com

Suspect In Limon Police Shooting Convicted Of Incest

3-10-2011 COlorado:

Dennis Marc Hasty Wanted On Sex Offender Registry Violation; Limon Police Officer Jay Sheridan Dies;

LIMON, Colo. -- The man who police say shot and killed a Limon police officer before shooting and killing himself was wanted for repeatedly failing to register as a sex offender.

Dennis Mark Hasty, 52, was convicted in 1993 for incest in Knox County, Tennessee. According to his criminal record, the violation occurred on Nov. 30, 1990.

When he was released on probation, he failed to register as a sex offender and went back to prison for another term in February 2001, according to court records.

In 1996, he was charged with aggravated rape of an 8-year-old girl but pleaded guilty to a lesser charge, according to Knoxville News Sentinel in Tennessee.

He was supposed to register as a sex offender after he was released a second time, but the last time he was on the registry was in August 2007 in Texas, according to officials.

In January 2008, deputies with the Roane County Sheriff's Office went to a home where Hasty was staying to conduct a welfare check. Before officers could talk to him, he ran out the back door, the U.S. Marshal's Service said. Inside the house were two runaway teenage girls, according to the Sentinel.

While Hasty was a convicted felon, and on the run for some time, sources told 7NEWS that there was no indication he might come out shooting if approached by local police officer.

Dennis Hasty Vowed Somebody Was Going To Die, Manager Says

Hasty had vowed that somebody was going to die and that he was never going to jail, according to the manager of the trailer home park where he lived.

The manager of the Wagon Wheel Mobile Home Park said Hasty rented the trailer as Mark Hasting. The manager, who only wanted to be identified as "J," said he had not idea Hasty was a wanted fugitive.

Hasty apparently told residents that he was an ordained minister, but the manager said there were signs something was wrong.

He said, before Wednesday night's standoff, it was chaos in Hasty's trailer home. J said he knows because he lives next door.

"I wasn't really surprised because he had said before that if the cops ever came banging on his door that somebody was going to die and he was never going to jail," J said.

J said when officers showed up to pick up Hasty on Wednesday night, he told officers that Hasty owned several guns and was a dangerous person. J said he offered to knock on the door and get Hasty for them, so that they could avoid a confrontation, but J said the officers said they had it under control.

He said he heard the shooting around 6:10 p.m.

"I heard three gunshots and officers started screaming, 'Man down!'" J said. "(There were) two small caliber guns and the really big caliber gun."

Police said Hasty shot and killed Limon Officer Jay Sheridan while he was in the hallway. Sheridan was there to pick up Hasty on a out-of-state fugitive warrant.

When Hasty opened fire, two other officers with Sheridan ran for cover inside a separate part of the home and remained there for their own safety, police said.

Those officers were initially thought to be hostages, but Hasty had barricaded himself in one room of the mobile home, and the officers had just ended up in a separate part of the mobile home.

At 10:40 p.m., SWAT officers swarmed into the mobile home and knocked down one wall.

"I believe that's where they penetrated the house and put the grenade in," said J, pointing to a hole in the outside wall of the house.

Hasty was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the bedroom, Limon police said.

Jay Sheridan Was Father To 21-Month Old

Wiping away tears during a Thursday morning news conference, Limon Police Chief Lynn Yowell said Sheridan was a great officer.

Yowell said he wasn't going to speak about the investigation but would speak as the family spokesman.

Sheridan, 27, was born and raised in Simla. He was a husband and the father of a 21-month-old girl.

That girl was Sheridan's pride and joy, Yowell said.

The girl was wondering why everyone was in their house Thursday morning, Yowell said, and it was heartbreaking.

Sheridan was 21 when he joined the Limon Police Department and was with the police department for 6½ years. He said Sheridan was a jokester who was always having fun, but when he put on a uniform, he buckled down and went to work.

"He wore his uniform with a lot of pride ... sorry (choking back tears), and a lot of respect. And is going to be sorely sorely missed," Yowell said. "When he came to work and he put on the uniform, he came to do the job."

He attended Northeastern Junior College in Sterling and was going to major in auto mechanics. However, he attended a law enforcement academy and decided to pursue a career as a police officer.

Sheridan is survived by his parents, who still live in Simla, his wife and daughter in Limon and a brother and sister in Fort Collins.

"Jay was a really good guy. If you needed anybody to talk to or if you needed something to do, he would be there to help you," said Sheridan's friend, Brandon Soderstrom.

Sheridan's death was one of only five officers on the Limon police force and his death has dealt a big blow to the community. The other Limon police officers have taken a leave of absence, although they were still wearing their uniforms Thursday in honor of Sheridan.

Deputies from neighboring Morgan County stepped up to secure the scene and take to relieve the officers who were on duty all Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

"They've suffered a tragic loss, and they need some time to realize what's happened here and to deal with that," said Dave Morgan with the Morgan County Sheriff's Department. "It's a tough thing. It's something that ripples through the law enforcement community. We're down here to provide support. We're giving them law enforcement services for Lincoln County as well as Limon PD."

Yowell said Sheridan was like a son to him.

"Not only was Jay an employee of mine, a colleague of mine, but he was also a dear friend of mine," Yowell said.

The shooting is being investigated by the 18th Judicial District Critical Response Team. ..Source.. by Kim Nguyen, Web Editor

Police: Killer accused man of molestation, gunned him down

1-26-2012 Washington:

A Des Moines man accused of killing a man after accusing him of molesting children has been charged with murder.

King County prosecutors contend Denzil R. Moore shot Thomas R. Humphries at point-blank range during an argument inside Moore’s pickup truck on Jan. 10. The Des Moines man and a purported accomplice are alleged to have then dumped Humphries’ body at a vacant house in Auburn, where it lay undiscovered for days.

“Moore effectively executed a man,” Senior Deputy Prosecutor Don Raz told the court. Moore, 41, has threatened to kill others who know the details of the killing and is believed to have a list of people to kill, the prosecutor added.

A review of court records showed Humphries has not been arrested for or convicted of sex crimes in Washington. He was not listed on the county sex offender registry.
